Steve
Basically, I turned it on this morning, and the hard disc seems to be acting kinda 'slow' and I can hear clicking type noises, every 15 seconds or so ... maybe longer, i'm guessing. It doesn't sound normal, and each time it clicks, it sort of freezes my comp for a VERY slight second. (for example, as i type, a click will result in a slight lag). Disc access seems slower too, but I have no idea why this has happened? Is my hard disc on the way out? I surely hope not, its been in, a year maximum. Is there anything I can do, to remedy this? I really anticipate your replies! Oh, and btw.. .Its a Western Digital 120Gb 7200RPM / 8Mb Cache drive.
danbalsh
Have you run the usually DiskUtility stuff to fix any errors? Boot off the OS X CD and run a DiscCheck on it.

Steve
Yea, sounds that way, which is annoying, i posted over @ CubeOwner too, and they mentioned 'RMA', I assume this means, replacement - from Western Digital, any clues on this guys? I still have my doubts, because like you've all pointed out its not right, and points the to the fact its about to die. But surely if it were about to die, it couldn't slip back into what appears to be, normality? *shrug* DannyBoi, i don't - no, as it happens,But @ the same time, we'll see... divinatum
yeah, that drive is goin... BACK UP!!!! ive had bad luck with western digital drives, my 14 gig that is about, 2 years old is on the end of its life. if its in warranty id RMA it, sell it, buy a big maxtor drive. 120 gig or 200 gig :D
dougkinzinger
Yup......if it's making noises in a repetetive pattern, then it's dying. Check and see if you can do an advance warranty replacement, and copy off your data before it's too late!
Dessimat0r
Get the data off it now, do not chance it There is no doubt that it is on its way to the grave, give the data on it a pleasant send-off onto some other storage medium.
Steve
Hmmm, cheers... Ok, so how do i know if i'm warranty still? Is there something stamped on the drive or something?
suntzu
The clicking that you are hearing is the actuator arm slamming against the side of the drive. As the platters in the drive become demagnitized the arm can no longer read the partition boundaries when it seeks. The drive is on life support. Buy a maxtor...hahahah no way don't you know they are the same company as quantum..the worst drives ever. lastly you can go to the manufaturers website and do an rma (return material authorization) lookup using your serial number. Wickedkitten Veteran Posted February 10, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 10, 2004 How much space is free on the drive Neyo? I've got the same HD and over a year ago it started doing that because there was less than 10% of the total drive space remaining. Deleted some off off it and got it up to 40GB free and it stopped
Gary_Player
Back you **** up, run diagnostic software (if neccisary) and call it in...replacement only took 3 days to get to me and I had everything backed up so I was alrite...Good Luck ;)

Its been 'normal' for the last 24hrs, seems fine.
mrelusive978
:ninja: Yeah, it might seem 'normal', but I can tell you from experience that the drive could work for a year or it could work for five more minutes...I wouldnt chance the data loss if I were you. Take it from the guy with a stack (I mean THIRTY) of dead HD's with the same problems, who also just got rid of a stack of disks just as big with the same issues. PLS SAVE YOURSELF AND YOUR DATA. :ninja:
Steve
wow, guys, i really appreciate it. It seems you really do care, which is nice. For the formidable future, i'm going to leave it. But @ the sametime, its got me thinking. Ok, what if this drive is FINE... Its got me thinking, about having TWO 120Gb drives. Now, with that said, my Cube will not take two, thats needless to say. But FireWire...?! Ok, i might be jumping in the deep end here, but don't FireWire enclosures just encapsulate a regular hard disc? Could I whack this into a FireWire enclosure? ... How much would I be looking at... ? Holla back, and once more, thanks... :)
danbalsh
Yeah you could just put it into a Firewire enclosures no problem :) they range from ?50 - ?150 I think, check out CancomU(Y)Y) I was thinking of getting one myself quite soon and getting a big IDE drive for it.
