patseguin Global Moderator Posted February 9, 2004 Global Moderator Share Posted February 9, 2004 OK, this may be a little off-the-wall. How many of you Mac users also have a PC or Notebook PC? I love my Mac and would never "switch back". I have been looking at a really nice AMD 64 Notebook PC, just to have Windows for gaming and whatnot. Anyone else do this? sebaz
I have a 12 in powerbook, and a 2.53 Ghz P4 desktop, mainly used for Enenmy Territory/CS and my parents lol. Along with that i have a tosshiba satellite notebook that i use it to test out software, OSes and all that. Currently it has Windows 2003 Server with Exchange 2003. My weapon of choice: the powerbook.

aristotle-dude
If you have a Desktop mac, I guess I can see someone getting a PC laptop for certain things but be warned. PC laptops are not great game machines. If you have a mac laptop, I don't see the point of a PC laptop and would consider getting a cheap PC desktop. I personally don't have any plans on getting a PC any time soon. I spend all day at work on a PC. :)
Southern Patriot
My current setup is in my sig (the OptiPlex is due to arrive tomorrow :D ). I also have 512MB of RAM that is coming in later this week for the PowerBook (it will replace the 64MB stick, so I'll have 640MB in it). I've also just upgraded the hard drive in the PowerBook to a 20GB one and also have an external USB 6GB drive that I share between my computers. The PowerBook is now dual booting 10.3.3 and Yellow Dog Linux.
R2x
I have a HP Laptop and a Mac G4 Tower. I love my Laptop. I use windows for just about everything, e-mail, web browsing, and yes even gaming. Although I mainly play RPGs, I've never ran into a problem yet with gaming on it. I can honestly say that I wish I could afford a Powerbook, but they're just too damn expensive. I use my G4 mainly for my .Mac account, photos and home movies. Everything else is on the PC. I have to use windows for my job, otherwise I would be using an Apple notebook or Linux :ninja: on my current notebook. My personal recommendation: if you are going to buy a PC laptop for gaming, you should check out :alien: Alienware http://www.alienware.com They are the Jedi of gaming laptops. You can even do upgrades on the video card on the laptop. I've never seen any other PC manufacturer offer that.
patseguin Global Moderator Posted February 10, 2004 Author Global Moderator Share Posted February 10, 2004 I'm looking at an eMachines laptop that has an AMD 64 3000+, 512MB RAM, 60GB HD, DVD/CDRW, wireless networking, widescreen display (so they call it). All for $1349 after rebate. I'd use it for gaming and messing around with Linux probably.
the evn show
I have a couple of PCs still kicking around that perform network duties (backup server, print server, sandboxed ssh server). There is a Windows machine that I will be using until the end of this term: I remote desktop to it so I can run VisualStudio: everything else should be running some flavour of BSD. The router (linksys 11g kit) has been hacked to run linux too, though I rarely use it for anything other than it's inteded purpose. I have no plans to buy a PC in the short term future, but I might build a new x86 machine a year or two after the next version of Windows ships, provided Microsoft cleans up their act and code in that time - that's probably a half-decade away so not worth thinking about. NeoMayhem
My iBook is my only computer, but I have a lot of older PC parts laying around. I am putting together a little 400mhz webserver for somebody now, it will run some version of linux and apache when I am done. Who would use windows server for something like this? It would cost like $2000, about 100 times what the hardware is worth...
patseguin Global Moderator Posted February 10, 2004 Author Global Moderator Share Posted February 10, 2004 Sorry if I wandered way away from Mac discussion. Is the Radeon 9600 with 64MB sufficient to run Doom 3, HL2, etc.?
Sir CoRN
I use my iBook as my main machine now, but I have AMD 850 Thuderbird that is my router + fileserver. Runs Debian Intel 1800 Willamette, that was my main machine, but now just sits around. Pehaps I will use it file storage + folding AMD 750 Spitfire, getting this soon. Will be a DNS server. R2x
Yeah. That eMachines laptop does look pretty sweet for the price. And you know a 64 bit system should give you very little trouble with any games. Good luck and happy shopping.
patseguin Global Moderator Posted February 11, 2004 Author Global Moderator Share Posted February 11, 2004 As happy as I am with my Mac, I still feel a need for a Windows box. Not really sure why. Maybe withdrawl from years of use, maybe lack of gaming. The eMachine laptop might find a space on my desk here. *EDIT* Oh, and I downloaded Windows XP64-bit. Anyone using it? Now, I'm WAY off Mac OS discussion. Feel free to move this thread where it belongs. :)
mr_daemon
The router (linksys 11g kit) has been hacked to run linux too The Evn Show, don't they already out of the box? And if so, where can I find info on this, and what does it brings?

Games are not "a lot" of things I can't do with a mac. It is possible to live without Windows, you know?
