Qualcomm announces Quick Charge 5 for 100W+ charging

Today, Qualcomm announced Quick Charge 5, its latest fast charging technology. It's promising to deliver 100W power to a device, giving it a 0-50% charge in just five minutes, or a 0-100% charge in 15 minutes. The device will use stacked cells, allowing for double the speed and double the voltage.

"Quick Charge 5, our fastest and most versatile charging solution, will enable consumers to enjoy their devices for longer periods of time, without worrying about the time required to recharge. We are proud to expand our technology portfolio and make accessible 100W+ charging a commercial reality," said Ev Roach, VP Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. "We work closely with manufacturers to create industry-leading devices that meet consumers’ demand for more immersive and accessible mobile experiences."

It doesn't just deliver more power though, because Quick Charge 5 is also more efficient then its predecessor. It will run at 10 degrees Celsius cooler than its predecessor did, with all-around better thermal management.

Qualcomm says that it has over a thousand accessories from a variety of partners. After all, Quick Charge is meant to be closer to a standard for device makers, something that can be easily implemented for devices using a Qualcomm chipset. Various OEMs have some up with their own solutions, and the issue ends up being that you need very specific accessories for that to work.

Quick Charge 5 will arrive in devices in the third quarter of this year, and it's supported by the Snapdragon 865 and 865+.
