serial connection question

Recommended Posts

I have just bought a (cheap) serial cable to link my pc to my housemates pc to play multiplayer games. I cannot get most games to work with it, but that is not my main question. Whichever pc i choose to host (XP on one ME on other), the other pc will lag quite badly. This happens in the two games I have managed to get working. These are Unreal Tournament and some other 1st person game i cannot remember the name of now. I set the connection up as a new network connection and it says it has connected at 19.2k off memory. The performance is almost exactly the same as when I try to play UT online with my 56K connection. I know that a serial connection isnt fast but I thought it should be able to handle a simple game?? Some of the other games that will not even recognise the connection are collin mcray rally 2 and worms world party. Also I probabily should say that the cable is quite long (10m) - i know this may be the problem?? Any idea of how to sor tthis connection out will be appreciated!

thanks in advance

Kieran

serial connection...this is it...the main problem is the low bandwidth of a serial cable connection...i had the same problem when i tried that...and i must say this is it....you can't do nothing:(

i was hoping that wouldnt be the relpy - oh well it was only ?15. I will b getting a network card in the summer, but the guy who i want 2 network with is moving out of our student house soon so it isnt really worth the effort (also he wont buy one). Does anyone know how 2 max out a serial connection as it would be nice if I could get UT to be playable (it almost is now) just need a little bit more speed...

thanks again

Why can't you set the serial port speeds on each PC to 115200 bps?

Although my goofy 2000 Pro PC seems to think that a serial port can run at 128000 bps.

I would also ensure the following on each port:

8 bits

no parity

1 stop bit

i tried setting the port speed higher and it still connected at the same speed and still had the lagging. Also I have got those settings on the port - always have had.

thanks anyway
