Cristiano Amon to replace Steve Mollenkopf as Qualcomm CEO

Today, Qualcomm announced that its current President, Cristiano Amon, is set to be its next CEO. The current Chief Executive Officer, Steve Mollenkopf, is retiring after 26 years with the firm; however, he's going to stay on as a strategic advisor for an undetermined period of time. Amon will step into the new role on June 30.

"I am honored to be named the next CEO of Qualcomm and appreciate the confidence that Steve and the Board have in me," said Amon. "Qualcomm is an incredible Company. We have been at the forefront of innovation for decades and I look forward to maintaining this position going forward. In addition to driving the expansion of 5G into mainstream devices and beyond mobile, Qualcomm is set to play a key role in the digital transformation of numerous industries as our technologies become essential to connecting everything to the cloud. The need for our solutions has never been more pronounced and our leadership position has never been more evident. I look forward to working with our 41,000 employees around the world to create technologies that revolutionize the way people live, work and connect with each other."

Mollenkopf is 52 years old and has been CEO of the San Diego firm since March 2014. He started off his career there as an engineer and worked his way up the ranks. Amon, on the other hand, has only been President at Qualcomm Incorporated since January 2018. He initially signed onto the company in 1995, also as an engineer, and he's helped to drive the company's 5G efforts over that time.

In fact, Amon would seem to be the face of those efforts, always being on-stage at the main Snapdragon Technology Summit keynote and providing interviews with journalists. Up until June, he'll be considered the Chief Executive Officer-elect.
