I'm taking the jump

I've decided i'm going to get a $998 eMac after my Income Tax Return comes in. I'm not completely "switching" as I have 2 Windows XP machines that I would never give up. I do like OSX Panther though and I can't wait to use it!

I've used OSX before but never for more than a couple of minutes, is there anything that I should know (shortcuts, tweaks, etc...)? Thanks!

I've decided to do the same except get a 12-inch ibook instead. Then I'll have a windows laptop and a mac one. :D

iBook only if you want a laptop, the eMac is faster and has a higher screen res...

The eMac is faster even though the processor is the same?

I would recommend the iBook. Unless there is a specific reason you do not want a laptop, I don't know why anyone would not want to get one. You can hook it up to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse if you need to but otherwise you have total portability. However, you do loose 200mhz.

He was probably refering to the 12" iBook for the speed. The 14" inch is a little useless because the bigger screen is the same resolution, so it just strech's the pixles, it doesn't provide any extra screen real estate. On top of that it adds weight and mass, most of which people do not prefer in a portable unless there is a clear advantage to it.

The 12" iBook is the way to go IMO.

I've never liked the eMac, so I'd say go with the iBook. You can always hook up an external monitor to it if you want. Both will give similar performance results. Plus you always have that option of taking the iBook with you if you need to.

OK, I think the eMac is out of the picture. I'm down to choosing between the iMac and the iBook.

The iMac has:

17" Screen

1.25Ghz G4

512mb Ram

80gb Hard Drive

SuperDrive

Price: $1998

The PowerBook has:

15" Screen

1ghz G4

512mb Ram

80gb Hard Drive

ComboDrive

Price: $2398

I'm leaning towards the PowerBook. I think everybody will agree but let me know.

if you hold a 15" powerbook up to a 17" crt you will find that the powerbook screen is typically larger (wide) than the crt. It will be a little smaller in height - but you'd expect that from a widescreen display.

the optimal resolution for a 17" crt display is only 1024x768 (though there are some crazy people who will run higher than that). the native resolution of the powerbook is ~1280x860.

You may want to spring for a superdrive in the powerbook. external dvd-r drives don't always work well (if at all) with the built in os x apps. iDVD won't work at all, and itunes support is hit or miss. burning from the finder can also be sketch.

Unless you're really commited to either not using included burning tools and buying Toast or never using recordable dvd i think its a good idea to get one from apple with your powerbook.

Well, both are LCD screens so I don't think i'll run into a problem there.

The main reason why I didn't go with the SuperDrive was because it's an extra $200 but I'll think about it. Anybody else?

I can't see his avatar either

Sorry guys, I have signatures and avatars disabled in Neowin so I didn't notice. I switched my hosting and forgot to update the links. Should work now I believe.
