TikTok announced today a new feature meant to help curb the proliferation of misleading content on the platform. The service now flags potentially misleading videos and shows you a prompt when you're about to share one.
Gina Hernandez, Product Manager for Trust & Safety at TikTok, wrote in a blog post that the new prompt will be displayed on videos with unverified content or inconclusive fact-check result. The goal is to limit the video's chance of being shared.
TikTok has already teamed up with fact-checking organizations such as PolitiFact, Lead Stories, and SciVerify to review certain videos for removal. Of course, content that has been confirmed to be misleading will be removed. For fact checks that are inconclusive, TikTok may prevent the video from appearing on anyone's For You feed.
In addition to the banner that shows up for users, content owners will receive a notification informing them that their videos have been flagged as misleading. If users try to share the flagged content, they'll see a pop-up message asking if they want to share that video anyway even if it's unsubstantiated.
The latest feature was developed in partnership with Irrational Labs and is available from today in the U.S. and Canada. It will also go live worldwide over the next few weeks.
