Need to identify a cable

Recommended Posts

I am looking for the cable that goes from the back of an APC UPS to the computer, it has an RJ11 connector on one end and a USB A connector on the other end. Does anyone know what the name of this cable is?

That just sounds like a serial connector cable; shouldn't be anything special unless it's using a custom pin layout.

I find plenty of options on Amazon just searching "RJ11 to USB"

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rj11+to+usb+adapter&crid=11V6P0M4RT3H1&sprefix=rj11+to+us%2Caps%2C223&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_10

"APC UPS cable" seems to show several results as well, are you looking for the cable itself or do you need to know its pinout?

It seems to be a 10-pin "RJ50" (10P10C) connector by the looks of it.

It amazes me he couldn't do a simple search for that but I don't think that is the cable needed for his APC UPS (unless it's real old or something). It should be a USB-B to USB-A cable.

In fairness to me, the last time I ever had to hunt for a cable for the UPS it was specially made so it had to be bought from APC. The device is a Backup pro 1000, and searching APC's website does not tell me the name of the cable and searching Amazon for APC Backup Pro 1000 cable yields nothing related to the cable.

Real old? the current APC UPS's use RJ connectors on the UPS end and USB A connectors on the other end still for the current models at least the Smart-UPS's do

yeah that's some bad (almost non-existent) documentation on the serial port on their website 😮

IIRC, I had to call APC the last time I needed to order one and they were able to tell me where to look, I was hoping that it would be an easy find considering it has been close to 10 years since I had to hunt for a replacement cord. :/

using a different search on Amazon "UPS Serial Cable" I came across more entries that will most likely work.

I'm guessing all smart UPS devices use the same pin layout for their serial cables (as that's for the most part standardized thankfully)

this should hopefully be what you need

I guess was wrong... TBH never used APC personally. WTF would they do that?

According to APC, the cable is AP9827, and searching Amazon I find one, and also Ebay.

good good; the one I linked you states to be that model too so that should work for what you need (Y)
