Thinking about the switch...

I must make ppl feel stupid when I say I have no problems with my pc.

Your spelling is making me stupid.

I don't think that there are many stupid mac users , just PC users thinking Mac Users are stupid.

*caugh* thegameulta is a flamer...

This has got to be a first. For the last two decades people have been saying apple is doomed and now we have our very own "THEGAMEultra" predicting not only that apple is doomed despite having $5 billion dollars sitting in a big pile and millions of satisfied repeat customers will but that Linux; something that's not even a company will what takes over. Amazing!

Read the neowin news.... Linux has more desktop share than Mac :)

However, feel free to severly beat THEGAMEultra.

ON TOPIC: The notebook will work fine on the campus.

lol, as a PC user, I'm laughing my ass off at the ability for you guys to turn every single thread mentioning PC and Mac into a flamewar. There's just this tendency for PC users to belittle Mac users, and unfortunately, Mac users seem to be the type to firebomb a city because they don't particularly like an individual living in it. THEGAMEultra is the perverbial reckless teen who's thrown a torch into the fireworks stand, and let me say the conflagration is spectacular. :D

Look, I use a computer to get onto MSN to hold conversations. Sometimes I use it for e-mail. I also use it for occasional artistic works, music, web-surfing. My PC does all this decently, and hell, anything which can run FireFox is God, right?

My point is, this is what I use a computer for, and a PC fits the bill nicely. It even has a tappad which responds to tapping, instead of having to click buttons. I like that. Sure, no great battery life here, but what's that in a world where the nearest AC outlet lies about 4 feet away from you? Everyone's got different needs for their computer, and sometimes, PCs meet these needs better, sometimes a Mac meets these needs better, and sometimes, Oh My God, a Lindows computer meets these needs.

Quick! Lets shun everyone who doesn't use the same OS, because they're heretics, idiots, morons, terminally stupid, homosexual, whatever! Yikes, you all need to be shot in the foot, and then we'll just see how much stock you put into this inane argument over PC or Mac while you're bleeding to death. Quit the flaming. Go play in traffic instead.

*puts on flak jacket*

Yes, but the Macintosh user base remains the same. The new linux users can be accounted for by windows -> linux switchers, OS8/9 -> linux switchers, and new installation. Apple has had sub-5% market share for years and apple is still here making money. Remember linux runs just fine on PPC hardware too.

Also, market share != user base.

EDIT to be on topic, this brings up a very interesting point:

Even if the OP can't stand the macintosh way of doing things or doesn't like dealing with Fink etc. He can install a copy of Gentoo Linux and have the same end-user experience as someone with an x86 notebook, but with the advantages of Apple hardware (light, good battery, "style", size).

It's not like he's tied to OS X if he wants to own a macintosh.

Yeah, I know, I was talking 'bout Operating Systems, rather than user base/market share... because linux doesn't sell the hardware, and linux doesn't sell an operating system (well, thats MOSTLY true, technically paying for the support or some *** like that)

As for market share = user base, stop talking like that, you remind me of statistics class. PLEASE don't remind me of statistics class!

fisrt off, has anyone made the jump, and are they still happy now?

this is my big question, will the apple wirless technology (air port i think) work with the 802.11b/g that most companies use?

THis is what i am really needing to know, as im going off to college in the fall and my school has a wireless campus and they currently use 802.11b and will be upgrading to 802.11g over the summer, will an Ibook work on this network?

Thanks

Now, back on topic

I "switched" over 2 years ago. If I wasn't happy, I'd be using a pc right now ;) I have no use for a pc and don't plan on buying one ever.

Airport Extreme will work with the B and G standards....Airport works with B. If you do plan on buying a wireless router, don't get the Apple Airport. Very expensive and subpar performance compared to linksys or netgear.

As far as your school, check to see if they will still support B after they upgrade, or if it will be G only. A new iBook will work with both....an older iBook without airport extreme support will only work with B

yes i've made the jump over a year ago, i'm extremely happy even though i still use Windows. :)

yes your iBook with work on your school's network. get the new iBook with Airport Extreme (802.11g). i have an Airport Extreme Base Station which is 802.11g, but three of my laptops are 802.11b, i'm finding 11Mbps just won't cut it. ;)

Software is up to you: what do you want to do?

There is the typical stuff like Microsoft office for documents, and maybe virtualpc if there are some windows applications you absolutely must run (part of office pro).

Most of the other applications I use are free. Here's a list of everything I have installed on top of the default package, you can use it as a starting point:

not free

- Adobe Photoshop7: I sell pretty pictures, this is what I use to make them

- Apple Keynote: It's like powerpoint but made by apple. It's great for presentations at school.

- Macromedia Dreamweaver: Because I make websites, this has some very powerful features above and beyond anything else out there.

- Microsoft Word: because unfortunately this is the standard word processor.

- Toast Titanium. It was a gift - I rarely use it but it's nice to have for creating discs with more options than the built-in CD-R capabilities provide (I'd say this is optional)

free

-GNU bin utilities. They're just updated versions of the default command line tools. Probably not very interesting unless you're a unix-head.

- Microsoft RDC: so I can use windows software without installing VirtualPC by using a headless machine in my closet.

- VLC: Arguably one of the best video players on any platform.

- xCode: It's part of os x technically - it's the development suite.

- xPod: so I can backup my ipod in one easy step

- iPod viewer: for making CDs with songs from my ipod.

- Bit Torrent client: because when OS X updates or new software (ie: firefox) comes out the server is always bogged down and bit torrent is the best way to get a copy quickly.

shareware

- CandyBar: to replace system icons in one nice easy action

- pixadex: to keep track of the icon collection

- MP3 Rage: the best MP3 tagging/renaming/organization software anywhere.

The included utilities cover off the rest of my needs:

iChat AV, Mail, iCal, Address Book, Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, keychain access, disk utility, terminal, emacs, grep, curl, and preview.

I would argue against that, I am an mplayer (terminal, the GUI version is not that great) guy, but VLC is still good :p

Toast is definitely optional, A combination of the Finder and Firestarter FX work just as well. Firestarter burns VCDs and SVCDs that you cant burn with OS X.

These following apps will enhance your OS X experience, but they are not required for anything.

LaunchBar - Lets you open any app/file/anything else on your system quickly with the keyboard. I was amazed when I first tried this app.

Sizzling Keys4iTunes - Lets you control iTunes with your keyboard. Nice, small, free and simple.

WindowShadeX - lets you adjust some OS X settings and make windows transparent.

I was a big fan of mplayer until recently. I find that VLC is more compatible with otherwise shady WMV files.

Do you have a link to the command line version of mplayer? I'd give it a shot.

but at least airport you can update the firmware on... with a linksys, the updates come as exe packages...

edit: scratch that, netgear has the sense to make upgrades system-independent... linksys only has exe packages though.

Linksys don't come as .exe files. You update the router through the browser. I've done it...works fine.

Here you go http://osdn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge...inary161203.zip

They are maintained by the same guy as the who does the GUI port, but this is just the command line version. It includes mplayer and mencoder, both work great for me.

You can compile mplayer yourself from the source on the official mplayer site, but it uses X11 that way, so the performance is a lot worse.

 i just went to linksys's site a little bit ago and it was a zip file...

but i'll trust you, as you say you've done it :ninja:

either way, i just like airport better

zip files are a little different than exe files. Once you unzip the file, you get the data file that you upload via your browswer.

well, in my own defense, i did try dl'ing one of the zipped files, but it would never dl, so i wouldn't be able to tell you what was in it

Funny thing is , hes flaming Mac Users but he can't spell Service Pack 1. ...

...

Just because you are so 1337 ...

Please dont start flaming.

It would be like me saying haha you didnt even spell elite right. Even though his opinion wasnt put out the best dont start being bitchy about it.

I would love a Mac but would def get a pc before a mac. PCs are great and in value sense are even better. 5 grand on a pc and 5 grand on a g5. you could make a pc to kill the g5 in most aspects. HOwever macs have a certain elegant appeal to them. i am considering an ibook. I got an ipod and thus far have been impressed (minus the metal backplate, the fingerprints adn scratches show up like mad on that.) I like PC's. I like Macs. PC makes more sense to me. But if I had disposable income i woudl go mac and pc for sure.
