Yesterday, Samsung posted a video teasing a triple-folding mobile device in action along with other display concepts such as a 17-inch foldable laptop, a folding tablet, slidable display, and more. This was a day after Samsung Display unveiled its new OLED panels that showcased a large foldable display it called S-foldable and an under display camera system for laptops at the Display Week 2021 event.
Now, a new trademark application has been spotted that hints at the company's future plan for a rollable device. The trademark was filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office and it revealed Samsung's moniker for its rollable display: Z Roll.
At the moment, little is known about the Z Roll like whether it refers to a new lineup of foldable phones or to its recently teased slidable display. As it stands, the trademark application has a long way to go before it wins approval from the EU's intellectual property office, so it may take a while before we see an actual product.
That said, Samsung is not the only company that's planning on a rollable or slidable device. Earlier this year, LG teased its own rollable phone concept at CES 2021. Previously, TCL also showed off a rollable device concept and OPPO revealed its own bet towards the end of 2020. It remains to be seen when and if this concept makes it to an actual product for consumers.
