Newb getting into music

Recommended Posts

So, I decided finally, on getting into headphone music.  Not really knowing what to get, I just ordered a few things........

I like the name of schiit, and went with that.

So, went with:

Valhalla

https://www.schiit.com/products/valhalla-1

Bifrost

https://www.schiit.com/products/bifrost-1

For head phones, I decided on cheap head phones:

Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro Open Back

Hi, my advice is to do some research on what you want from your audio, you can be very well spending 1-2k on amps and dacs when the most important are the headphones.

I've got a few headphones myself, including the 1990 Pro and I love it, BUT, it's a very bright headphone. Unless you are willing to do some eq, and change the pads (Dekoni Hybrid for ex.), I think there are better alternatives. Maybe the Beyer T1 2nd gen, Hifiman Sundara 2020 edition or Sennheiser HD 6xx.

As for amps and dacs, I would go for something like Topping E30 + L30 stack, or JDS Labs Atom + Shiit Modi 3+, unless you really want balanced audio in the future...

If you can, go in a shop and listen to a range of different headphones before you start spending money. Good luck.

Beyerdynamic aren't cheap - Fostex are your better bet if you're looking to get very good sounding headphones at a lower price. Beyerdynamic are overpriced. They're good, but they are overpriced.  Fostex is what you want.

Fostex - they're good sounding headphones.

I was originally going for Yggdrasil, but decided on something middle of the road, since I just want to tip my toes into this.

For head phones, I've also been eyeing Audeze LCD-X or something better.

Another thought was going for Seihnheiser HD 800 S or better.

But, I, well, stepped back and decided on something cheaper.  When it comes to computers, I tend to go high end, but I see that music is on a different level, when it comes to prices.

Yeah sorry but if is Seihnheiser for me and I am TOTALLY fine for anything under $500

I tried Airpod Max and they sound amazing and really nowadays I listen to MP3 and Spotify. Not sure I can even appreciate all the details ever.

But recently I did see to small bands play live music with multiple instrument in a room of about 50 people - and DAMN the experience was TOTALLY different from any magnified concert or recording I ever heard, even when test 1000+dollar headphones on surround audio records

Could not get what I wanted, but I did stick with schiit.  Got Vahalla 2 and Gungnir, with the DT 1990 Pro.

But, now I'm thinking, should I try a different headphone?  The one I have is good, I really like it.  Z reviews rates it high.

Currently looking at Focal Clear MG.  Cause why not.  Compare my other headphone with something more expensive, sounds good.

Perhaps I should just finish....

Got that build half finished, but got distracted with this project.  /sigh

Bah!  Went ahead and ordered Focal Clear MG.  Good reviews from what I've read.

Yup, that's what I've got.

I've heard a lot of good things about Focal Clear (and MG), hope you like them, they are on my list as well as Hifiman Arya.

UPS delivered Focal Clear MG and uh...amazing...about all I can say....No regret on this purchase.

Like buying an SSD or NVME drive, do you need it, not really, but it is so so nice.

I find it so funny you refer to yourself as newb...

Nowadays I listen to Spotify on $50 headphone.

Helll I sometimes listen to music on my phone speaker....

The hardware you are talking about is clearly not newb.

Makes me think if I should actually invest in better audio hardware....

I never saw it as a priority but I guess just like with good TV you don't know what you are missing until you try it.
