Powerworks
I am using Lilo to dual boot linux and XP... but lilo didn't detect XP.. so I boot into linux.. I come to a console.. so I type liloconfig and make the xp entry myself.. it worked.. but now there is no linux.. - I can fix that easily.. But what about the booting to console? How do I start up a graphical interface in slackware?
markwolfe Veteran Posted February 14, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 14, 2004 Did you install a GUI (like Gnome/KDE/IceWM/flux/twm) yet?
Powerworks
Yes. It did it in the installation.
kongit
you need to manually edit the lilo.conf file. fist rerun liloconf and get linux to load (you can do this by using the live cd) once you have linux working edit the lilo.conf flie (its in /etc) add this at the bottom, save lilo.conf, run lilo other = /dev/hda1 #the hard partition that windows is on, mine is on /dev/hdc1 label = WinXP boot-as = 0x80
markwolfe Veteran Posted February 14, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 14, 2004 Which one? for kde, it is startkde for gnome, it is startgnome you may also try startx You will also need to make sure that your X Window System is set up right (XF86Config). If not, it won't work... There is a command to help you set it up. I think it is xf86setup... DISCLAIMER: I am not a Slack guy, so this may not be 100% accurate, but these should help. Powerworks
ok... I gotta get back into xp now.. I booted to the install cd.. and typed liloconfig but it won't accept.. then I booted to the second disk and it acts as though it will run liloconfig.. but then just goes back to prompt... Any suggestions? (no floppy drive). I could always just reinstall it AGAIN! (third time)
markwolfe Veteran Posted February 14, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 14, 2004 ? Are you stuck trying to get Linux to boot from LILO? Your first post indicated that you could fix that, and just wanted to know how to start your GUI.... If LILO starts, you should have an option to edit at that point. (I haven't used LILO since 1999, so I am not 100% sure). In GRUB, you press 'e' to start edit mode. You need to be able to stop the boot process in LILO to do your repair. Alternatively, you can use a LiveCD to edit your lilo.conf (as Crazy Travis posted), or perhaps booting off your Slack install will allow you to do a repair/edit. I was working off the fact that he said he could fix his LILO himself. His question was at the end, and asked how to invoke his GUI.

kemical
to run a login screen automatically instead of just dumping you to console you need to edit your /etc/inittab and change the default run level to
