Edge for Android will soon give you the option to authenticate before autofilling fields

The greyed out toggle to enable authentication for autofill

Reddit user Leopeva64 has noticed a new toggle in a development version of Edge for Android that allows the user to require biometric information or a PIN before autofill can be used. Autofill is a convenient feature that allows websites and apps to access the passwords stored in your browser so you can login seamlessly, but if your device falls into the wrong hands it could have disastrous consequences.

For the time being, the feature is grayed out so it was impossible to Leopeva64 to provide screenshots of the feature in action, but presumably, it will just cause a pop-up to appear where you can verify your security details. It’s unclear how long the toggle has been available in Edge Canary but verification for autofilling passwords has been an idea that Microsoft has been working on for a while because it came to Edge Canary on desktop with Build 91.0.849.0 in early April.

In the comment thread of Leopeva64’s latest post, another user, ultravio1et, confirmed that the authentication option for autofilling is also available on iOS and has been for some time.

If you’re running Edge Canary on Android make sure you’re up-to-date and head to the Passwords section in settings. You should see Require biometric or pin grayed out. It’s unclear when this option will become available but it might be worth switching on if you value security over convenience.
