PrntScrn
wtf is lindows? I read the stuff on it's page (http://www.lindows.com/lindows_sales_intro.php) but I am still kinda lost. It's like XP, but on a linux kernal or somethign to that extent? I don't even know what a kernal is other than **** that doesn't pop in popcorn and hurts my teeth. Can anyone explain what lindows is in idiot terms for me? Also, is it worth spending my time looking into it more?
matt74441
Lindows is a version of Linux that is designed for newbies. Its designed to be a real alternative to Windows, but instead of paying a one time fee for Windows XP Home or Pro, you pay a yearly fee to download free Linux software. I've never used it before, and I'll use it when hell freezes over.
kongit
its a version of linux that is meant to somewhat emulate windows. in doing so it rids its self of many of linux's best abilities and traits. In my opinion it is worthless and you might as well use a normal linux distro or windows.
waxing
Lindows is Linux, when it first came out it was intended to run Microsoft programs..since then lindows has dumped that stategy. Its selling point is CNR wich is like apt-get but only has apps that are compiled for lindows and it has a monthly fee of $4.95, and you are not paying for programs that are allready free....you pay for the service of CNR to install apps and updates for you with one click
bryonhowley
Lindows is a piece of crap that clames to be Linux. I use Linux (SUSE on my PC and Gentoo on my IMAC) but Lindows is pure crap. The best thing people can do to support Linux is to stay as fare away from Lindows as they can. Support Open Source don't buy Lindows!!
MG-Cloud
The best thing people can do to support Linux is to stay as fare away from Lindows as they can. Support Open Source don't buy Lindows!! I disagree with this ... take a look at the websites of a lot of your favourite Linux applications/communities (gaim, kde-look.org being among the most well-known), and tell me what the little banner on the side of the site says ;) While I personally don't agree with the paid model of Lindows, they are doing an excellent job of contributing back to the Linux community. Back on topic though, if you have the money and want to try it, it's apparently supposed to be a great stepping stone between Windows and Linux, if you're a little timid of taking the full plunge. markwolfe Veteran Posted February 15, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 15, 2004 First, don't predjudice yourself with all of other people's negative opinions. Lindows has a free download offer for their Developer's Edition at: http://www.nvu.com/landing_page.html Try it for yourself. I am sure you are intelligent enough to make up your own mind. Whether the outcome is that LindowsOS works for you, or not. It is your decision. And, for a summary of their support of Open Source, see here: http://info.lindows.com/opensource/ I will agree with posters who have said that it isn't as 'free' as other distros. However, LindowsOS isn't aimed for people who have installed Linux before. It is aimed at people like my mother-in-law who is clueless as to security and viruses, and would faint at a command prompt. It is a matter of being in the right demographics. Many Neowinners don't fall into the category of users they are targetting. LindowsOS puts polish on Linux, and tucks away the "scary stuff" from the newbies. Does this make them bad? I don't think so. Is it a distro I would run? No, but I would recommend giving it a try. digitallaughter
Im downloading the Developers edtion with that free coupon code. Might as well give it a try. Doesnt look that bad actually.........
Nichotin
even if you feel that lindows suck, think about this, lindows sponsored the prices for xbox linux, and now they are making a kickass WYSIWYG-html-editor (forked mozilla composer) called NVU. nvu looks real promising

If you had you would see that CNR Blows the hell out of apt get, it really is one click and everything works, you linux ******s spout off everytime Lindows is spoken about, and I bet a bunch of you have never touched it once. I don't run lindows, cause it doesn't do what I need, but my wife does, and CNR is a godsend, What other Linux Distro is making waves like Lindows? Lindows is sponsering Open Source software all over the place, even though they are bleeding money. I guess a person such as yourself changes your own oil, and cuts you own hair right? You've never eaten at a resturant ever I bet right? oh? you have? Well what the hell? why would you pay someone to cook you a steak when you can cook it yourself at home? I'll eat at a resturant WHEN HELL FREEZES OVER. See how dumb that sounds? Thats how dumb people sound when they spout off about Lindows, you sound retarded, if lindows is not right for you, thats fine, but there is no need for anyone to spout sh*t everytime its brought up, I started my Linux Journey with Lindows and I'm proud to be a lifetime member, Lindows just works... in the end thats all people will care about, not whether they can apt-get their program, but Does the frigging thing work? Once click in CNR and it just works... Thats all that matters, Lindows makes a distro for a common user... your more then a common user? thats good, go play with Gentoo or something.... /Rant off
AquaFX
Lindows really sucks, all it does is look like windows but operates like linux, but the thing is that is doesn't even run native linux software, most of them are modified. So there is isn't a point that that os but just for ppl that want to try it and give it to there kids and stuff. Like matt said, "i will use it when hell freezes over" and i totaly stand beside him on that one.
akaladis Veteran Posted February 15, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 15, 2004 for me, lindows is an attempt of the linux world to become something else... a win32/linux hybrid... i like pure linux distros a lot more... but thats just me
devilotX
What do you mean moddified? Emon
same here ..just tried Lindows last night .... disappointing experience. If anyone wants a noob oriented Linux distro then they should go for Gobo Linux not this Lindows POS. It doesn't mount any of your other partitions, The installation process sucks .. it doesn't detect any other OS installed in your PC and if I look around more, I am sure I will find more flaws ..but I just don't want to. And changing name for every app is just a NO NO
dreamthief
Tried Lindows, didn't like it. You are better off with Mandrake, Suse or Redhat if you are new in Linux. Gentoo is a good choice for more advanced users

Lindows is not targeted at people who want to run Windows + Slack + Gentoo + FreeBSD. People who use Lindows aren't going to be the ones who want to make sure vi stays named "vi", and want to remember they use "gtkam" to get pictures from their camera. Just because I use a Debian based distro (which I actually paid for), doesn't mean that I apt-get everything. I'm glad that there are companies out there supporting Linux, but Linux will survive without Lindows. I don't own a car, so I don't change my own oil, but with the money that I save by not using Lindows, I can just pay someone to cut my hair for me. I've eaten at the occasional restaurant, again with the money that I saved by not paying for free software. I think I may have contradicted myself  I'm glad that you are a dedicated Lindows user, they need all the help that they can get. If I were to even try Lindows, it would be a huge step in the wrong direction. I'll stick with Libranet, because it just works...

kongit
I don't care about lindows...I am never going to use it. And I won't suggest other people use it either to replace xp or another linux distro if they know what they are doing. I feel that lindows is somewhere lost between windows and linux and neither can call it their own.
