Lindows

who cares, linux is about personal choice, use it ;p

Agreed.

A small number of (newbie) users may prefer LindowsOS.

Some will like Xandros or Lycoris.

Others RedHat, or Mandy.

Or Debian, or Slack.

Or Gentoo, or LFS.

Some people may try Linux for a few weeks and go back to MacOSX, or XP, or whatnot.

Use what serves your needs best.

Well I am in the lindows cd typing this. I must admit that it has impressed me. Its not what you think when you think lindows. its defenitly not like linux or like windows, but you can see characteristics of both. What has really impressed me is that this live cd is a complete os. I can listen to music, use open office (its on the cd), I know I can't print, but most people should be able to. If you mess up or computer this is definitly an alternate os to get online and get help. I won't be using this as my normal os because it lacks the spit and polish that I have given slackware and the usefulness of xp, but I won't say anything bad about it anymore. its definitely worth investigation if you don't want windows and want a very easy to install operating system. all i have done was burning it and putting it in the drive and rebooting, it started and worked all on its own. impressive for a livecd. I will be keeping this live cd because I can see the use of a having a complete operating system on a cd that lets me do almost anything I need. :)

I tried lindows, it was actually pretty decent. Altho I wouldn't recommend it, its not the worst OS ive ever used. Mandrake was by far, probably because it hated my Radeon, I dont know.

Lindows is okay in my opinion. But i dont quite like it though.

It's not that bad as some would put it as. It's a matter of personal perference and taste. That's is what Linux Open source is about, CHOICES!!!!

Here's aiming at you Windows

Let's see if I can help with the "cons"...

no Internet: Hmmmm The internet is still out here, so need to find out *how* you connect to it. Do you use a modem? Ethernet card? Wireless?

cant access SD card: The card will probably show up as a serial hard drive (/dev/sda or sdb, or something like that)

doesn't accpet .ico files: Are you trying to open them for editing, or trying to use them to change icons on your desktop?

no right click "set as wallpaper" option: You can save an image and then make it your desktop image. You are talking about the Internet Explorer thing where you can take something from the web, right?

cant highlite address. (to insert an address of something like a wall in the browse thing, you have to type it out.): Huh? There are several tricks available here. The middle button in Linux is the paste button. If you have a blank address bar, you can highlight an address from anywhere and middle-click in the address window and get it to appear. No need to type. You can also select an address with your normal left-click, then right click to activate it as a web page. If I am missing something here, please let me know, but this is one of Linux's strong areas, I think (plus auto-completion of paths and names by using TAB at the command prompt).

Real Player is ooold (1998), so is the version of OOo: If CNR doesn't have anything newer, you can try updating outside of Lindows. However, if you are running from a LiveCD, you are out of luck. Those programs are on the CD. Install to hard drive to be able to update apps. ;)

Cant tell if its using my gfx card (no device manager): Nope. No "Device Manager". That's a Windows thing. However there should be a KDE control panel that lets you see and change things. You can also go to the XF86 config file to peek at it.

cant get over 1024x768: This is easy to change on a real install. It may be a conservative guess on the video card, or the monitor. Make sure the correct monitor and card are selected. Make sure that your card's RAM is accurate. These all control your maximum resolution.

Couldnt save to C drive: Is your C Drive NTFS format? Linux cannot safely write to NTFS. And, if you are using a LiveCD, it may default to "Read Only" for your FAT drives, as well (for peace of mind that accidents won't happen). If it is a FAT parition, you can remount it with rw permissions.

Man! That was a lot of questions!

ok, u know how in a web browser there is a naddress bar with neowin.net in et or whatever. in lindows there isnt one i dont think.

i am using an nvidia nforce 2 ehternet controller BTW. i was able to access my router and stuff and the router said it was connected to net, but when i tried it didnt work.

Could be firewall settings. Lindows is able to go out and ping your router, then you can communicate.

For your other items:

Yes, there is an address bar in the web browser window. It is Mozilla, if I recall correctly (just relabelled). You might have to adjust a setting, or stretch the window wider, maybe.

Not sure about your SD card. More info (and possible a real installation where we can freely modify and update) is needed.

Icons, I don't know. I have never changed individual icons. I picked a set that I liked, and stuck with them...

I know... This is not much help, but it is 2 in the morning here... ;)

For the setup you are using, give Mandrake or SuSE a try....although Red Hat (if you feel like poking around on eBay you can buy it) is the best option for starters. Mandrake has the benefit of being fairly easy to install, SuSE is easier in some cases, and Red Hat is kinda the cadillac of Linux distros...although it's fading out (*weeps*).

If you REALLY wanna get your hands dirty, give Gentoo a try. They have VERY detailed instructions for getting it going all over the place, depending on *how* dirty you wanna get your hands. Gentoo, once installed and properly configured, is the FASTEST distro there is. Debian is nice too.

Or, if you just wanna TRY it and dont feel like installing, there's Knoppix that runs straight off a cd-rom. Look around the Linux sites, do some homework, and decide which one is right for you.

Good Luck.
