Switching...

Recommended Posts

So... I might be switching in a few months but I have a few questions:

1) I have several apps that I have windows licenses for... How can I get those to run on Mac? Will I need to use virtual PC or whatever it is? And, if I use that, will Studio MX 2004 work with it [the windows version]? How 'bout Adobe Photoshop 7? <--- those are the 2 main programs

2) Will a 2 button wireless mouse work with Macs? Say that I want to play Warcraft III on it, if I am using a 2 button mouse, will it work just like a Windows computer?

3) Firewalls. I currently use Zone Alarm, what can I use for Mac?

4) Backup and multiple partitions. I run GoBack (for system problems) and Retrospect(docs) to backup everything in case something goes wrong. What can I use for Mac?

5) And is there a DeadAim like program for Mac?

6) FTP client - I use SmartFTP... I am assuming I could find something similar for Mac... right?

7) Mail. I will most likely get Office for Mac. Will I be able to import all of my Windows stuff?

i htink there are microsoft versions of those apps so they would run better that way. 2 button mouse works except there isnt much u can do with the rt button in osx. i dont think u will need a firewall especially if u have a hardware one in youre router or modem. u can import outlook stuff and word docs just copy paste. however if u dont get officevx and just use built in office, Mail can (im pretty sure) import outlook too.

1) Windows versions will not run on OS X (obviously). You can try calling macromedia and adobe and asking them if they have a trade in program. I've heard anecdotes about people who have had some success with that.

2) Yes. plug it in, it will work.

3) os x comes pretty much locked down by default. The included firewall is all you really need.

4) for backup i like a combination of rsync and carbon-copy-cloner (a front end for the *nix DD utility). Roxio Toast includes Deja-vu and apparently its alright. For manual backups it's usually good enough to just copy your home folder to a CD/DVD-R. Very little is actually stored anywhere else.

5) There are a number of AIM clients: you'll have to talk to someone about specific features because I'm happy with iChat.

6) There are several FTP clients as well as command line options for ftp and sftp. take a look over at versiontracker.com

7) Yup - just copy/paste the documents. exporting from outlook to entourage takes a little more work but it's not difficult either

button mouse works except there isnt much u can do with the rt button in osx.

This is false on so many levels. You don't NEED a multi button mouse, but if you have one it will be used by the OS. most applications have a context menu (it's just as common on os x as in window) for the right click. Scroll wheel does what you would expect, and the extra buttons can be mapped to thinks like expos?

what evn show said, along with the following:

really, you don't need a firewall for osx... the common worms that come with windows (msblast, anyone?) do not exist on osx.

for aol clients: proteus, fire, adium... search on google for them, those are the ones i can come up with now... also, check versiontracker.com (under mac osx) and search for aol or aim.
