Although Patch Tuesday is less than a week away, Microsoft has released an out-of-band update for several Windows 10 configurations to fix an issue related to Remote Desktop. The KB5010196 update has been made available for the following configurations with the OS build being 17763.2369:

  • Windows Server 2019 for x64-based Systems
  • Windows 10 Version 1809 for x64-based Systems
  • Windows 10 Version 1809 for ARM64-based Systems
  • Windows 10 Version 1809 for x86-based Systems

As noted by Microsoft, this patch fixes an issue with Remote Desktop where users would be unable to reach the server or experience slow performance. This is a quality update described as follows:

Addresses a known issue that might prevent you from using Remote Desktop to reach the server. In some circumstances, the server might stop responding. The screen might also appear black, and general performance and signing in might be slow.

The update works in tandem with Windows servicing stack updates (SSU) so be sure to check out the known issues here before you go ahead and install it.

Customers with affected configurations are necessarily required to install the August 10, 2021 SSU (KB5005112) before they install the latest cumulative update (LCU). The update is not available via Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), and can only be installed via standalone packages available on the Microsoft Update Catalog here.
