the evn show
I've been the biggest whiner about this forum not having an FAQ for Macintosh systems and OS X. I was going to start writing one but I'm not exactly sure what questions would be relevant. Things that I think would be a good idea: The Basics How do I install/delete applications How do I delete/move/copy/rename files How do I create aliases What files should I backup Virus protection and firewalls Networking How do I share files between two macintosh systems How do I share files between a Windows computer and a Macintosh How can I share a specific folder How do I host my own website How can I enable remote control over my macintosh How can I remotely control a Windows or Linux machine Internet A quick review of Safari, IE, and Mozilla derivatives. Ad blocking FTP clients AIM/MSN/ICQ Video and Audio Chat IRC Usenet Purchasing Where can I buy a new mac Finding discounts (ADC, Student store, government discounts) Used/refurbished hardware what system is right for me How much does OS X/iLife cost where can I find additional software for OS X From there I think some sections on *NIX, Security, general maintenance, known bugs, recommended software (ie: toast to replace nero), customization, emulation of x86 hardware, and running macintosh software on a PC could follow. What else do you think would be worth discussing? A discussion of what makes OS X would probably be a good idea too. The existing newbie guide is getting fiarly outdated and I think it's time for an update.
thetman
can we also get a freeware list like we have for windows
Chad
Just take every question that's been asked upteen times and put it in the FAQ :) A customization section should be on there. Perhaps a "switcher" section. For example...."x app on OS X is like/better than the y app on windows". Links to macnn, macrumors, thinksecret, etc would be good. I totally agree. How about people starting writing up some questions with answers. I could compile them into one central topic and we could use that as our FAQ. the evn show
Sounds like a plan. I'm going to start on the basics because those seem to be common questions for switchers. An example of installing say MS office with drag/drop and the installer and uninstall by drag/drop and the uninstaller. Finally a note on preferences files and how to delete them if people are so inclined. EDIT: Fixed my bug! lines = characters, you should be using paragraphs i guess. Could be a productive night.
