Daem0hn
if you really want to learn about linux, do a text based install of gentoo, i know i learnt ALOT from doing it manually compiling the kernel, config files, compiler options, etc, etc, etc i will be here (on neowin) every step of the way to help you, you can post from # links2 a textbased webbrowser on teh live cd
dotRoot
Well I've never used linux from the GUI, always from the command line/console, because I came from unix, but I can help you out with linux after you get it installed and I'd recommend a "text install" if that means just a pure console interface (if that's what Daem0hn meant) to learn linux. Compiling is pretty easy if you read the README files that come with the source. Use a text editor and stick with it (I use pico, but some people like VI, etc.) Use the command "man" a lot (its the manual). Also if you want help on a specific command then you can usually type command --help (its just like typing command /? in DOS). Give it a few weeks or whatever then install it with a GUI and it should be a lot easier. Anyway that's what I'd do.

markwolfe Veteran Posted February 17, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 17, 2004 worst. editor. evar. I'll admit that vi takes some getting used to, but I think every distro has it. Even my Zaurus SL-C700 uses vi at the command prompt.

Yeah... vi is quite versatile. I learnt linux with vi, so I'm used to it. I keep getting ****ed at nano because I'm used to pressing i before I start typing and it shows the i :pinch: nano's notepad-like interface makes me feel noobish. With language like that, probably not a lot of people. ;) But, as I said earlier, the best thing is to find someone local to help you out one-on-one. Or try your best, and post here when you get stuck. You have TONS of people here willing to help out!

I never tried it... Kindof a useful function to have, if you want to test Windows shares... (or temporarily mount one to access/save important data). I'm going to check it out and see. Bad news, if true... :(
xp1ode
well i dl the suse live cd and it works pretty good, takes long to startup tho, and it doesnt recognize my ntfs drives, where my windows, my vids, and music are at. I also tried the slax live cd, and that one did support my drives but it wouldnt recognize my sound hardware. I was wondering if the folks over at fedora are planning on coming up with a live cd for fedora??? i have yet to try fedora since i don't feel like doing the whole dual boot thing, and i dont have another computer where to install it. Oh well i guess il have to wait for knoppix 3.4 which i read somewhere that it was coming along, thanks for the tips markjensen....
