JoKo
I have the same problem with Slackware Linux 9.1! I have two S-ATA HDDs in a RAID-0 and nothing gets detected :( ...
MR_Candyman
My roommate runs SATA and got every distro working with no fuss. I have a PCI Controller card (not raid, but recognised as part raid, part SCSI) and have no problems either. I think you just need to pay attention to the drive names it assigns to those disks. They will most likely not be hda1, hda2, etc.
Imperfect63
you need 2.6x kernel probably if 2.4x install won't recognize your sata controller. the addressing will be same as those of scsi, ie. /dev/sda

LordHatrus
I (used to) have SATA working with Fedora. I have the SATA chip built into my mobo, and it was supported in 2.4, but I did notice they added some more SATA stuff in 2.6.x,,,, I would defintely compile myself the newest kernel... I think it has more device drivers as well for the SATA controller, maybe yours was previously not supported?
Rudy
looks like my SATA controller is still not supported by 2.6, i tried fedora core 2 test 1 which has 2.6 and it didnt work.....neither did mandrake
MR_Candyman
try installing the modules on your own...pre-made installers often miss things (just like windows)

Rudy
i was reading some information on the internet about the SATA controller i got and all of them said it was hopeless, even 2.6 is not going to support it the SATA controller is SIS
Rudy
hmmm doesnt look too good, after about an hour of research still no hope, every website says its only compatible with Windows
MrA
I had the exact same problem when I tried to install redhat Severn. After some digging, I found that linux could be installed if I switched my ATA setting to compatibility mode. I have an ASUS P4C800E-Deluxe but I'm sure there's an equivelent BIOS option. And as far as I know, the SATA specs are backwards compatable with PATA, it's just the fact you may have 3 ATA controllers (primary, secondary, tertiary) rather than just 2 that's the problem. With my comp, the SATA was set as the tertiary ATA controller which meant that older OSs didn't see it.

Maybe a BIOS update is available which will have more options?

XST1
ouch dude, i know what you went through.... i also have an SATA drive and was completely irrated and upset when I couldnt get it to work. I tried every major distrib out there (Mandrake, SuSE, Fedora, Knoppix even, Gentoo and the list goes on), but I managed to get it to work with Fedora Core 2 test1's 2.6 kernel. I paniced when I got my new PC cause I had to wait 8 months, which brings me to this month, to get it detected. I asked around at linuxfourms.org and gentoo's forums but they gave me no help. Your best bet is to stay with the distrib with the latest kernel.
