aristotle-dude
I picked up a "Windows Only" External Sony DVD-+R/-+RW Writer at London Drugs yesterday and also picked up a copy Toast Titanium and iLife '04. Although this drive comes only with Windows software and a useless iLink ******ised Firewire cable (and USB 2 cable), I am happy to report that Toast recognized it perfectly when I plugged it in with my iPod's firewire cable and I was able to burn a DV-R image I had laying around. I also tested out Toasts DVD creation feature by adding a few clips and Photo directories. So far, I have only tested Fuji flim DVD-R media so I'm not sure if it will handle + media through Toast. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to Formac or Lacie drives, look for a dual USB2/iLink Sony external DVD-+/R/RW drive box. It will work with Toast. Unfortunately, OS X does not recognize burning from the Finder for external Writers but you can install ToastIt as a context menu to add files to a project in Toast from the Finder. This is not a problem as I will use Toast and Deja vu (included with Toast) for backup.
SFNE Freak
Does iDVD work with it? I know Apple says it won't, but you never know...
aristotle-dude
I no, it does not. :( You would have to use DVD Studio Pro, create the image and then burn with Toast. I'm going to see if I can hack it to work somehow. If iDVD creates a Video_TS directory somewhere when you preview, I might be able to create a script that sends the Video_TS directory to Toast. If you buy iLife (which I did) Apple should give you the option of burning to an image without having to buy DVD Studio Pro or a Super drive machine.
