Linux distro and kernel 2.6.x

Recommended Posts

Is there any linux distro that has 2.6.x already in and that installs when the distro is set up? 2.4.x doesn't support my chipset and last time I tried compiling a kernel when the system was already up and running I messed it all up so for now I'd prefer one that installs automatically?

Thanks...

Off the top of my head, Fedora Core 2 has a beta .iso out, as does Mandrake.

Of course, the DIY* or LFS** systems had it as soon as it was published. ;)

* DIY is Do It Yourself

** LFS is Linux From Scratch

Does anyone know where I could get some Fedora Core 2 Test 1 CDs and/or Mandrake 10 Beta 2 CDs from? Due to the fact I'm on a 56k connection..

When I used to use Mandrake 9.1 you updated through Mandrake Update, would I be able to update the beta 2 to the next beta or full version?

There is a Knoppix ISO floating around with a Gnome Centric Desktop that was released from a magazine called C'T in Germany, www.knoppix.net look in the News forum and you will find Bittorrent links for it.

Live CD debian with the 26 if you enable it at boot, there are steps to enable the disc to install to the harddisk as well.

You do not know anyone, or have anywhere you can get HIGH speed access? School, Work, Library, Inet Cafe? You could try http://tuxcds.com/ - not sure if they have beta's though?

Tell you what - if need be I'll burn and ship them to you - you buy me some beer, I'll burn and ship you the CD's you want. :) I would think you could find someone in the UK to do that for you - but worse case, I'll do it. PM if you can not find anyone else.

Thanks for the replies.. I don't know many people with high speed internet but I guess it's worth asking :)

As for my college they don't let you download absolutely anything and they don't have CD writers or anything..

Here you go - have never used this company. But looks like what you were looking for;

Fedora Core 2 test1 Release (BETA) $3.95

http://www.osdepot.com

Looks like they will burn it and ship to you - oh damn, they only ship to US and Canada - but there should be something like this, that will ship to UK??

slackware 9.1 one comes ready to install the new kernel. all you do after you have installed slack is compile the kernel and point the boot to the new image. it took me 1 hour to update my slackware kernel from start to finish

You can also apt-get a precompiled kernel image.

That is, if you run Debian (or Knoppix or Xandros or Morphix).
