Server Too Busy Messages...

Okie... I gotta get this off my chest

As one of the largest tech related forums/news outlets on the net, I can understand that Neowin must get hammered with traffic all the time. Recently though, not a day goes by where I will not see a bunch of "Server too busy, try again later" messages appear on my screen when trying to either read the headlines or post in the forums. This is getting super uber annoying. I totally realize that Neowin is Ad and PayPal supported, and I'm sure, also voluntarily suppported both financially and techniclally by a devoted bunch of Mods/Owners.

I think I can say that the vast majority of hardcore 'Neowinites", the people like myself who visit this site religiously everyday would jump at the chance to become some sort of "premium" Neowin members, and enjoy a much more fast and stable Neowin experience. Even if a small fraction of the 40,000+ members gave, say $10 or $20 bucks a year, I'm sure that Neowin would be able to maintain a strong and stable Neowin for everyone, not just the few people who would shell out some cash. Maybe even give a few bucks to add the line "Member of the 'I support Neowin with $$$' Alliance" in their sigs, just anything to make the server a bit more stable.

I'm not saying that imo Neowin should go private, not by any means. Neowin has proven itself to be a haven for n00bs and professionals alike searching for some free input or help on a tech related subjects.

Anyways, just my 2 cents. Made me feel a bit better too after seeing around 20 pages come up with that server busy message in the last 10 minutes. :D

Some ideas are fluctuating in the works about this matter

Could you be a bit more specific Radish? Not being nosey or anything like that, just now I wont be able to sleep knowing that I could be a real bought and paid for member of Neowin! (If that's what you're referring to) :woot:

Ahh! One of those "Mod/Owner Keep it all hush hush" things.... got ya ;)

Nice to know something is coming up though... maybe that'll let me sleep through the night now :p

Cause we're so good :D

As said, things are under way to keep us up, however no amount of money or server resources in the world will keep even the most determined DDoS'er under control.

What I find crazy is we don't even know who is doing the DDOS and why? I mean, if you're trying to take the site offline, you should at least have a reason...

the reason usually is 'because they can'

It's not a matter of bandwidth, its a matter of actually ordering and keeping the server up. Also a seperate server for premium's would just be stupid and too much work. If this idea did go ahead, it would probably mean getting another dual xeon box and linking it with this one.

we plan to increase our current resources very soon by upgrading to an even better server. I won't say anymore than that because I can't tell you where/if and when it will take place yet

but understand that we aren't allowing this to become another problem :)

we still haven't decided on a member premuim thing yet, but we may not be able to rule it out in the near future purely because of current demand for neowin.

I hope this answers your question lardiop :)
