Kind of a Linux Dilemma

Recommended Posts

I have kind of a problem. I reported a major bug to red hat bugzilla:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=115755

but my problem is that the guy from redhat wants me to attach the /var/log/messages file. I cant get to this file since I cant boot into linux (which is why I wrote the bug in the first place). I can only run a 2.6 kernel to begin with, so thats why im using Fedora Core 2. Any idea how I can get to this file?

First off, thanks for reporting bugs and issues! That is how Open Source gets better....

Now, as for getting that file, I would suggest using a LiveCD (such as Knoppix) to get access to your linux partition. You will also be able to post this online, or send the file via email or whatnot.

Use your install cd's as a rescue disk, mount your installed linux filesystem as a directory, then you should be able to at least copy /var/log/messages to a floppy disk or wherever you want.

I'm not sure about Redhat, but most other distros I've used offer the rescue disk feature on their boot iso images. If redhat doesn't, I'd suggest downloading a minimal gentoo boot image and try that.

*edit* Never tried Knoppix, but the live disk feature sounds like it would be quite beneficial to your situation.

I'm having a problem, im not to familar with shell commands, and cant figure out how to mount the floppy drive (cant find any fdX devices nor can use the mount command) and then copy the file to that mounted floppy drive. And NeoMayhem, I have Partition Magic 8 with windows installed... its just that partiton magic doesnt support Fedora Core 2's partitions for some odd reason (and I dont know how to access the files from there anyway). Thanks.

first thing to make sure, mount only works und user "root" on livecd's generally. second thing:

do you use scsi or ide?

use fdisk on the linux-shell to see which one is the right partiton and mount it with:

mkdir /mnt

mkdir /mnt/hd

mount /dev/hdXY /mnt/hd #X=harddrive letter (a for first, b for second,...) Y stands for the partition number (1 for first)

or for scsi:

mount /dev/sdXY /mnt/hd #same explanation as above

then chdir to /mnt/hd/var/log

cd /mnt/hd/var/log

there you should find the file "messages", beware, this one could be a big one! (exceeded 300 megs on my gentoo unstable before finding one kernel error)

next mount your floppy drive, make sure a floppy is inserted

mkdir /mnt/fd

mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/fd

or use another harddrive (perhaps a win-partition?)

mkdir /mnt/hd2

mount /dev/hdXY /mnt/hd2

then copy the file

cp /mnt/hd/var/log/messages /mnt/fd

or

cp /mnt/hd/var/log/messages /mnt/hd2

you are done

Thanks guys and bladerunner for helping me out with this one. I used bladerunners instructions to sucessfully copy the file to my floppy drive and then uplaod to the guys at bugzilla. Thanks again.

Another convenient way for Linux users to use DOS-like commands to deal with the floppy drive is the use of the mtools set of commands.

Do a man mtools to see how to use commands like mformat mlabel mmount mmove mcopy and more.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha

That's amusing.

Actually what happens when you report a bug or an issue is that the project team ignores the problem for a few months until they decide that it's time to re-write everything from scratch, thereby re-introducing your problem and hundreds of other bugs.

I am unclear how this constitutes progress, but then again Linux users have never been bothered by such troublesome trivialities as "making sense".

hmm htmc, I believe you are in the wrong forum.  here is a link to the correct one:

Who needs well-reasoned, thoughtful replies when you have flatulence?

Keep up the good work, but please don't share your bestiality fetish with the rest of us. We don't want to know about it.

Yes, gorilla-man.

one might believe you are posting nonsense here on purpose. as myself beeing (some sort of) a linux developer, sometimes i have to deal with bugreports. and even micro$oft has to deal with them. so stay behind your beloved windows worm-enabled box and stay away from this forum, if insulting people with an other opinion as yours is everything you can do. flamewars are getting boring as more and more people and companies switch over to linux because of security- & stability-issues with every flavour of windows.

As (some sort of) a linux 'developer', I'm very proud of your ability to recognize that I was, in fact, posting things on purpose. I'm unclear as to how I could be posting numerous messages by accident, short of having the same kind of intellectual tourettes that many neowin readers seem to be plagued by.

However, I like the way you criticize my 'insults' by insulting me, and deride me for failing to contribute in any meaningful way to the discussions here by writing vague, insubstantial drivel that fails to address anything I've written or to make any kind of positive case.

Keep up the good work!

Just ignore htmc.  He/She has a history of inflammatory remarks that attempt to spark arguments.  A review of his/her posts here:

https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=...sult_type=posts

shows little, if any, positive contribution to the forums.

On every occasion, I have made a bona fide effort to contribute positively and constructively to the discussions on neowin. My efforts are met with vitriol and ridicule and I have no choice but to defend myself against these baseless and unjustified attacks.

I apologize if you find opinions that go against your own to be inflammatory, or that it bothers you that people actually have the temerity to think on their own instead of blindly accepting your dogma. The volume of your posts on Neowin does not make you the final arbiter of all that is True and Good, and I do not feel myself compelled to accept everything you believe. Apparently, this bothers you. Perhaps, instead of trying to crush dissent, you should open your mind.

How can I conduct meaningful discussions with people who refuse to do the same? I'm not alone in this, and it's hypocritical of you to single me out for abuse.

I like the way you use links in your posts, though.

Man, the irony of that statement had me rolling on the floor :D

sorry htmc, but I agree with timdorr...I read the convos backwards...at first it was "man, this guy's just getting picked on for a different view" then I read the rest. It seems very doubtful you've ever used linux, much less used it for enough time to learn what you were doing.

As for timdorr's comment specifically, even though he's a mod, I still don't disagree that it was uncalled for. He pointed out a very ironic sentence, and only said it was ironic, nothing more

Try me. Do you want a list of distributions I've been using? Do you want to know what my first kernel was? Do you want to know how I got started?

Or would you have to have root on my computer and on the servers I administer for you to believe I use linux?

The only motive he could have possibly had to point out the irony behind that sentence was to inflame the discussion further and to instigate further argument. Does he really believe neowin readers are too stupid to understand irony when they see it for themselves? Do you need to be told what is ironic and what isn't?

All of that can be made up...and franctly I don't care anyways
Or would you have to have root on my computer and on the servers I administer for you to believe I use linux?

Yet again I don't care...there is a difference between using and knowing HOW to use. Really I feel sorry for those servers since it's obvious you don't care what happens to them with posts such as "smash your computer with a brick".

How would it inflame the discussion further? Everybody's always against you without him saying that. I doubt anybody else will get involved because of his post. Believe it or anot a lot of people are simply too dense to notice irony on their own. I'm sure you didn't when you typed your speach.

To clarify, I'm responding solely because, quite franctly, You're being a nuissance to people who want to learn and have valid questions.
