Spykes424
I'm thinking of getting an Apple, (finally!), and I can't decide between the iMac and Powerbook. Some of my factors are: iMac is bigger i prefer mouse and keyboard to laptop keyboard and mouse(touchpad?), but maybe just because im not use to it i love imacs screen! you can move it anywhere, and the laptops are sometimes hard to see unless put just right. i can however take powerbook anywhere (wireless network at house). powerbook has built in apextreme card, imac i need to buy it for powerbook has more memory imac is more beauitful so what do u folks think? what wud you do? please dont say i should get a g5, i really cant afford that. i could afford something like an ibook or emac though.. whats your thoughts? Tran
Well are you going to need the PowerBook's portability (any time in the future)? If not then I say go for the iMac 17", a perfect machine.
Garry
I had both a 1GHz iMac and a 867MHz Powerbook G4 12". I agreed with you, I thought I would use the iMac more because of it's bigger screen and seperate mouse and keyboard. It turned out, I was just ALWAYS using the Powerbook though, since I could use it anywhere around the house or garden. Sure more screen space would be nice so when I upgrade, I may be tempted into getting a 15" powerbook instead of another 12". I'm used to the keyboard and glidepad on the laptop now, but if I need to, I can always plug in a seperate mouse/keyboard anyway. I ended up selling my iMac last month as I hardly used it. The powerbook is awsome and the iMac is just, well we all know they look delicous lol if you travel alot get a powerbook if you dont get an iMac
Spykes424
well im still in high school. dont travel much really. the only thing is i will be going to college soon, and i thought it might be nice to write papers around campus (wifi), and bring it to class and stuff, but thats not for another 2 years, and i can always get another right? heh. :) but if i get the imac now, im contricted to my room. cant go anywhere else really, i guess it would be kind of nice to sit in the living room with wifi and watch tv, but hey wait i got a tv in my room with my imac, but then theres my big wonderful bed, in which i cud sit in with my laptop, but i cud always get an imac and wireless keyboard and mouse! haha! oh no i just dont no!!!
NeoMayhem
Laptops are sweet to have in college, just about everywhere is WiFi ready, and using SubEthaEdit with friends in classes is great ;)
giga Veteran Posted February 17, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 17, 2004 You're in the same position as me. I just have 2 years till college so I'm waiting out to get a Powerbook or an iBook. Only thing is holding me back is that they'll probably have newer lappies by then in 2006. Tran
Well since you are going to college soon then I'd say go for the 15" PowerBook. Can't go wrong with that machine! You can always get the Apple Keyboard and Mouse later (or any keyboard and mouse of your choice I think).
Liquid
Im getting a 17" Powerbook soon :D
Knight'
Please wait man, don't rush into these older G4 models. It's a rapidly aging architecture, IBM have already posted info about the 90nm core G5 which dissipates hardly any heat at all! Trust me G5 PowerBooks and iMacs are on the horizon. The wait will be worth it!
Spykes424
well i want one now.. wont that also make them more expensive?
Knight'
If you mean Apple moving to the G5 CPUs for their Powerbooks and iMacs, then no. The prices will be exactly the same. It could even be less, as G5s actually cost less to produce than the G4s, but I doubt it. About the time of release of the iMac G5/Powerbook G5 there will also be a massive influx of people selling their older hardware on ebay (at least it's logical to assume this since I've been reading around on all the Mac forums and just about every Macphile is itching for the PBG5) w, so you could find bargain prices there as well :)
giga Veteran Posted February 17, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 17, 2004 I would wait. But thats just because I always want the newest stuff. Knight' can you give me a link to the g5 powerbooks?
Mosqutus
all comes down to portability, if you want to take your comp with you, powerbook........
Tran
Well if the G5 procs are soon coming to iMacs and PowerBooks then, yeah, wait. My dad was about to get a Dual 1.42GHz G4 but he said he'd wait. Now he has a Dual 1.8GHz G5 and a 20" Display. It was definitely worth the wait. Can anyone give a ball-park guess when those new iMacs and PowerBooks are coming out?
Knight'
Knight' can you give me a link to the g5 powerbooks? They havent been confirmed yet, they are still rumoured. But here's a good source of info; http://www.macrumors.com/. It's mostly conjecture, but it's fairly logical to assume from this article http://www.techworld.com/news/index.cfm?fu...ews&NewsID=1035 that the PBG5 is on the horizon ;)
Tran
SOI has been credited with reducing the power consumption of IBM's new 970FX chip. Under moderate operating conditions, the 970FX chip is expected to consume about 24.5W of power when clocked at 2GHz, according to internal IBM documents and analysts. This is about half of the power consumed by the PowerPC 970 chip at a slower clock speed. (TechWorld article) That's pretty sweet! ... And fast! Knight'
Panorama; you've hit the nail on the head buddy ;) Those are exactly the kind of specs which Apple needed for a CPU to go into a PB or iMac. Now they've got them. :D

isus
i would go g5 pbook  anyway, the powerbook is a great deal, it's portable, and i think the ram expandability is better on a pbook than on an imac. but it's great bc it's portable
Chad
Don't listen to these guys talking about G5 powerbooks. It will be quite awhile before they get here. Where are you planning on going to college? A large state university, or a smaller private one? There are VERY few large state universities with wifi thoughout campus. Most have a couple buildings, but that's it. Howerever, most smaller private colleges do have a nice wifi network in place. So if you are looking at larger universities, go iMac. Of course in two years, things could change. You can always hook your powerbook up to a nice 17"lcd if you want.
FatCat
don't get an imac your going to college in 2 years an are really going to regrett not getting a laptop when you had the chance , the powerbook is perfect for anything you want to do it's basiccly a portable imac and you can hook up a usb mouse to it if you don't like the trackpad.
