easy install?

Recommended Posts

Is there an easier / quicker way to install apps? At the moment I am either using the ./configure method or using rpms. RPM is ok but I always need to run around and find loads of depnedencies. Is there something (preferably with a gui) which can do this by itself ? Because it is taking forever to track down these dependencie files.

PS I am running slack9

:D

Use debian's apt-get system.

I use Synaptic Package Manager on Knoppix and I never have to worry about dependencies.

I've had to .configure only one application so far (gmplayer from http://www.mplayerhq.hu/)

Everything else I just click and run (without paying Lindows for the pleasure).

OK cool, I've downloaded Synaptic but how do I go about getting apt-get? I can't seem to find it. (for slackware 9.0)

sorry for the newbie question

apt-get is Debian's method for installing applications.

I'm not sure what package management Slackware has but if it uses RPMs then you may be able to use APT4RPM.

Or you could install Knoppix...

in your system up & running (with sound preferably) fire up one console window and type (as root) lsmod to see what kernel modules are loaded. so users here can say what driver that one needs and how to get it into knoppix.

would suggest gentoo + ebuild&emerge-system + porthole for an easy dependency tracking system, but gentoo is a little bit... well... confusing sometimes for people not so used to hardcore compiling.

Thanks! I've downloaded slapt-get but I can't install it. :( This is starting to get me down. I've read the readme and Install file but the instructions don't seem to work.

ps this is from http://software.jaos.org/

- Using Make: ---------------------------------------------------

To install:

  $ make

  $ make install

  Edit /etc/slapt-getrc (see README for details)

To uninstall:

  $ make uninstall

- Using pkgtools: -----------------------------------------------

To install:

  $ make pkg

  $ installpkg ./pkg/slapt-get-${VERSION}-${ARCH}-${RELEASE}.tgz

To uninstall:

  $ removepkg slapt-get-${VERSION}-${ARCH}-${RELEASE}

You will want to customize the values within /etc/slapt-getrc.

See README for more details.

- Using cvs: -----------------------------------------------

CVSROOT=:pserver:anonymous@jaos.org:/var/cvs

login with empty password

cvs checkout slapt-get

That's the INSTALL file... but i've tried typing all those things as su and all I get is messages such as "make: *** No rule to make target `pkg'. Stop."

I tried "installpkg slapt-get-0.9.8b-i386-1.tgz" which seemed to do something. I then got this

slapt-get: slapt-get (APT like system for Slackware)

slapt-get: slapt-get is an APT like system for Slackware package management.

slapt-get: It allows one to search slackware mirrors and third party sources

slapt-get: for packages, compare them with installed packages, install new

slapt-get: packages, or upgrade all installed packages.

slapt-get:

slapt-get: See /usr/doc/slapt-get-0.9.8b/ for complete documentation.

slapt-get:

slapt-get: Please translate

slapt-get: http://software.jaos.org/BUILD/slapt-get/po/slapt-get.pot

slapt-get:

Executing install script for slapt-get-0.9.8b-i386-1...

but i was then left at the bash prompt with nothing happening.

Oh my good gosh! This is amazing! I even learned that i could ...

bash-2.05b# swaret --list | grep gnome

...to list only gnome ones! Wow! How good is that?! Now if only I could change my keyboard to the UK layout I'd be sorted! I'm sure it can't be too hard :)

Edit : Just fixed my XF86Config file! I'm happy now :)
