Industry backs Microsoft

Simon Hayes and Ian Grayson

FEBRUARY 12, 2002

MICROSOFT'S public policy blueprint has won widespread backing from IT industry leaders, but has caused ructions between the federal Government and the world's most powerful IT company.

IT Minister Richard Alston described the report as "confused" and not taking into consideration issues such as "affordability".

The 50-page lobby paper, The Way Forward, was presented to Senator Alston last week by Microsoft Australia managing director Paul Houghton, who admitted its release was timed to coincide with the first parliamentary session of 2002 this week.

...It was important for companies such as Microsoft to create mechanisms so intellectual property developed in Australia could remain here.

Telstra - the document's major target - defended its role in developing telecoms infrastructure.

Communications and strategic affairs director Michael Herskope saidTelstra was on track to have a million broadband subscribers by 2005.

i hope this will bring some results for aussie broadband
