Gnome Sound Server

Recommended Posts

well actually xmms doesn't use alsa, but oss. however alsa can emulate oss. I ask again, did you unmute the volume controls in alsamixer? changing them doesn't unmute them. you have to press m.

I am at a loss of what to do now. I didn't have to do anything to get it to work besides unmuting the sound and turning it up in alsamixer. at first it made me mad that I had to do this everytime I restarted my computer, but soon you realize that its not that bad. all I can suggest is to start checking configs until you find the problem.

does the new 2.6.3 kernel work good for you otherwise? I like it.

I've checked eveything is ok in the mixer. All channels are not muted and turned right up to be sure.

PS when I talk about xmms using alsa, i mean via the alsa plugin from their site. I just find it strange that it allows me to run the plugin as root, but not as a normal user.

Aside from this, the kernel is great! It seems slower to start for me ( I get a delay whilst waiting for DHCP to assign my IP now...) but in normal use it seems a little more 'snappy'.

OK Thanks, the oss plugin does work. Unfortunatley gnome's sound server still doesn't- so I am unable to get sound from alerts for gaim, and flash files in Epiphany.

Maybe I should switch back to Win for the time being, until some more distro's use 2.6 as standard.I'd like it to be slackware though :)

now that you mention it, they don't work for me either anymore.

/checks to see if they are on.

well they are on, but they don't work, besides the loging in and loging out.

I don't like them anyway as they disturb my xmms listening pleasure. but if you must have them I guess you can go back to windows, but I only go to windows to print because my printer isn't supported. :(

Yea, to be honest I'm not that bothered about them in particular, more that I can't get everything to work. DVD's wont playback for example in gxine (giving an error about packet reading from the dvd) and put an avi into fullscreen makes gxine crash too. Also I am unable to connect to MSN messenger (gaim segfaults and I've reported it to the developers). It's just niggly things really that are stopping me from using it fulltime. It's kinda fun anyway, trying to get it to work properly :)

get mplayer. xine sucks.

here is my favorite site to get programs for slack. they are in tgz format so you don't untar them. you save them to a folder and then run installpkg package or pkgtool in that folder. I prefer pkgtool because I often download several programs in one go and install them all in a row.:

http://www.linuxpackages.net/

you can get mplayer there. no more compiling!
