isntall suse 9 with the 2.6 test kernel?

Recommended Posts

I've read about the ability to install SuSE with the 2.6 pre kernel, but I've not yet figured out how to do it? I figure an update to the 2.6.x kernel would be easier from the 2.6 pre then the 2.4.

Anyone have instructions? I've got the Cd set second hand with no manual (Flea markets rock!)

I like SuSE...

In fact, right now, I am using the LiveCD to boot up into a GUI environment!

I seem to have lost my Fedora on an "up2date" update using thier yum repositories... It locked up during the transfer, and when I finally had to kill it (it had aborted/stalled transfers several times before), it left my KDE a mess.

So, I think I will use this as a learning experience, and rebuild my Fedora (I was able to poke around using SuSE LiveCD).

Then, once Fedora is up and running KDE again (I can modify my GRUB to force init 3 for a text login, so I am actually in good shape), I think it is time to move on to another distro. One that isn't RPM based. Maybe a nice Debian unstable? I have also been dying to try Gentoo. I have drives to spare!

If I get stuck, I'll post a "help me" thread, but I want to get this on my own.

Back to the original reason I posted...

I like SuSE. Well-poslished distro, based on how the LiveCD looks. :D

I think it's included on the DVD as a RPM, just install it (not upgrade) and it should appear as a menu entry on LILO/GRUB. I'm not 100% sure of this as I haven't tried it, but that is normally how it is done. BTW SUSE do state that this is for developers only and that some thinks may not work as expected - don't forget many of the major features of 2.6 are already included with the 2.4 kernel supplied with SUSE 9.0 - things such as the new scheduler (that makes the speed improvement on desktops) are already there, the 2.6 test was included to allow developers to test things with 2.6 (i.e. if they develop modules) if they need to, for a desktop user there will be little or no difference, unlike with other distros where the new scheduler will make a difference.

IT would be cool to play with suse, however when I get to the desktop, I get to do one thing, be that re-arrange the desktop icons, or maybe click the launch menu

and then nothing works, My harddrive thrashes like hell and nothing works, the icons, the launch, right click on the mouse, the mouse pointer still moves, but nothing , not even the keyboard works.

I don't know why, nothing in my computer has ever had a nix problem before.

11 installs, never worked more then 10 seconds.
