STYLE CHALLENGED

Most visual styles are packaged up as zip archives and StyleXP can read these without a problem. The first step is to download a skin you like, and probably the best places to find them are DeviantArt (http://skins.deviantart.com) and NeoWin (www.neowin.net/forum/). Now simply install the skin using StyleXP (StyleXP | Add a New Style) and apply it. Note that many skins have all sorts of subdesigns, many of which employ the currently uber-trendy skinny taskbars. You can choose them from the 'Color Schemes' drop down menu.

Right, so now the basic elements are in place, let's get the main applications skinned. There are myriad Mac-styled skins available for Winamp, but without a doubt the best Mac-styled skin is StevieBM's amazing iTunes skin for Windows Media Player 9 (www.neowin.net/forum/). We're fully aware that Apple recently released iTunes for Windows, but the combination of Media Player 9 and this skin is truly better. It's much more flexible, it won't go renaming all your MP3s and the music store is actually open to people outside the USA.

For general help with things like visual styles and hacking system .dll files, the place to go is Neowin's customisation section (www.neowin.net). The principal advantage of Neowin is that all the actual skinners and customisation hackers hang out here, so it's a great place to get solid advice from people who genuinely know what they're talking about.

In particular, check out the Customizing Windows XP section - one of the busiest forums on the whole site.
