digitallaughter
I'm a little new to linux. I have messed around with Redhate,Mandrake and some other distros. Anyway I have a 800mhz dell inspiron 4100 laptop that has no cdrom. And windows decided to die. (the reason it has no cd rom is that died too). Anyway It has a NIC card and a floppy drive so I was wondering how I could install linux of my home network. Any distro is good.
kongit
get to another computer. many distros of linux have a small floppy disk version that will allow you to download and install their distro off the internet. download one, copy to diskette, then You then the diskettes into the cdromless computer, get it to start and if you read the directions go to it. splatnix
You can also look on Disc 1 of any distro that you might already have - there should be a dosutil directory that you can use on another Windows/DOS computer to make the flopp{y,ies}. I know this is true for RedHat/Fedora, SuSE and Mandrake. OT: You might want to check on eBay about getting a replacement CD-ROM on the cheap (if your Inspiron isn't under warrenty anymore). Just one of those things that comes in handy :)
htmc
Why don't you just go ahead and physically smash your machine? Installing Linux will render it unusable, so you might as well turn your computer into a brick the quick and easy way instead of going through the hassle and stress of using awful software to do it. I suggest a nice hammer, and maybe a chisel for good measure. Remember to disconnect the power and the battery.

The painful irony of this situation is that I've probably used linux more than any of you. Fortunately, I've now grown out of that phase of my life. akaladis Veteran Posted February 20, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 20, 2004 well, anyone who has used linux, would be able to compare Linux security & stability with Windows... nowadays you can even compare them in looks and usability... the reason im staying with windows (as the main OS) is id say the need for compatibility with my stuff... nothing more... I wonder why you treat Linux as worthless?

Linux's security and stability are inferior to Windows'. It doesn't matter if the kernel stays up (and even this isn't the case very often), the GUI and applications dump left and right. It's a horrible, horrible mess of kludgy code, poorly-implemented half-features, battling egos and pathetic usability. I reached a point where I just got tired of fighting my computer and wanted to get on with my life. I don't want to have to struggle to get software foo to work with peripheral bar.
