aldo
Hi, Basically I'd like some suggestions on what program I should use to start doing desktop programming. I'd say I was fairly advanced with PHP and mySQL. I want to eventually program for Linux, so VB and VB.net are not really my choices. I would like an open source based lanaguage aswell :). 0 +virtorio MVC Posted February 21, 2004 MVC Share Posted February 21, 2004 C#. Free IDE by Borland is available called C#Builder Personal Edition Borland C++Builder / Delphi are a piece of cake to use. (not free) Microsoft Visual C++ (MFC) is slightly more tricky, but my personal choice. (not free)

0 snippet1
Is it cross platform (ie, I will be able to use it on Linux in the future?) Once Mono (a Linux .net implementation) is completed, all .net languages (incl. VB.net and C#) will be able to be complied for and used on Linux and Mac OS X. 0 eSouL
SharpDevelop is a free and nice little open source C# and VB.NET IDE. GUI looks pretty much like MS Visual Studio and has many excellent features like code completion etc.
0 kjordan2001
There's always Java as well. It's kind of open sourced, I think they include all their sources in a jar file.

0 kjordan2001
They do include the source code with the SDK in src.zip. It's not open source in the Linux sense, but they DO include their source code for all their Java code.
0 eSouL
Are you saying they include the source files for their libraries? yes i am aware of that, but the programming language itself is not open source. Recently IBM has sent an open letter to Sun urging them to make Java open source.
0 best_uv_d_best
C# or VB.NET would be advisable. Currently VB has more functions and C#, but MS is working on adding these to C#. Basically, what syntax do you prefer?
