A "tar" is a Tape ARchive file. It is how programs used to be backed up in one shot onto a tape. There is no compression.

A "gz" is a G Zipped file. It is compatible to a .zip file in Windows.

A "tgz" is a tar file that is compressed. It will contain many files, directories and it is compressed with gzip.

"i386" stands for the Intel (or compatable) '386 series (and '486, Pentiums, Athlons, etc.) CPUs. ALternatives are PPC, MIPS, Alpha, etc. The standard PCs are all i386" types.

Slack and Debian are different 'distros', or packaged sets of Linux. The kernel is basically the same for all, but different features are included in each.

i dont know if i am using the right RPM. I DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT ONE TO USE!

Hell i dont even know WHERE TO FIND AN RPM!

Try using the RH9 version found here:

http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/15/li...ers_com%3E.html

Now, I just did it from source, and ran the compile commands as were given in the instructions. But the pre-packaged RPM may suit you better.

As for where these things are found:

rpmfind.net

sourceforge.net

freshmeat.net

are all good places to look for programs that are not included on your original CDs.

And, for your mp3 playback and other "patented" encodings, you will need to look for RPMs to enable these features. RedHat (in deference to the patent holders) does not include these encodings (it could be construed as a violation of the patent-holder's Intellectual Property to include these without a contract and compensation).

What is the program that is the linux WinZip?
If you want a GUI access into the "tgz" or ".tar.gz" types of files, just double-click it, and I believe that your Konquorer browser will show you the contents. You can then drag them out to any directory that you want. You might have to say "copy".
And what is the linux file type that is .exe?
In Linux, there is no ".exe" type of file. All that is done is you set the "executeable" attribute for the file and it will try to execute it (regardless of extension or lack thereof). This makes text scripts executeable. And binary program files can be executeable, too.
and is there a difference between the .tar.gz and the .tgz?
No. Just how whomever made the file typed the extension name.

and now whats a .dag? cause that is an option for me to d-load....

I think that the question should be who is a "dag"... :D

RPM build for : RedHat 9

Name : amsn

Version : 0.83  Vendor : Dag Apt Repository, http://dag_wieers_com/apt/

Release : 1.rh90.dag  Date : 2004-01-11 19:09:06

Group : Applications/Internet  Source RPM : amsn-0.83-1.rh90.dag.src.rpm

Size : 3557867

Packager : Dag Wieers < dag_wieers_com>

Summary : Full featured MSN Messenger clone.

Description :

This is Tcl/Tk clone that implements the Microsoft Messenger (MSN) for\nUnix,Windows, or Macintosh platforms. It supports file transfers,\ngroups, and many more features.

Apparently, Dag took the source package, and made RPMs for various RedHat flavors. I checked, and the downloads are RPM files.

On a side note...the source install was one of the easiest programs I've ever seen to set up...

aMSN has come a long way over the years, and it's turned into IMHO a much better program than MSN Messenger
