The Creative Zen? Yeah, it's crap. One of the many nice MP3 players that have a particularly weak headphones socket; broke with a month - not to mention that the Zen is HUGE!!!!!! [and has a weak case catch that rattles within weeks]. The headphone problem is much like Archos (they had AWFUL problems with headphone sockets failing and hard drive errors - couple of their players gave lots of problems and I know of two other people who have had HUGE amounts of trouble with them). The iPod is the lesser evil - with it only the headphones broke within two weeks  and the battery started to cut out (it would just turn off) - sometimes the sound would just stop but it reports that is was playing... then it would resume sound starting with the next song. Oh, and the case coming off the iPod is a bummer too (happened twice to me, once within two days of getting it and again a few weeks later - also happened to a friend I know twice as well... first time within a week also ). Plus in the UK the sound is too quite and you have to use a program called euPod to increase it to normal US level. Also, with the firewire connector the white outer shell was loose to start with and I had to superglue it back into place!!! I have yet to see the iRiver iHP120 break, but it has a crap navigation system and the backlight is not even close to that of the iPod - it's only a few weeks old though, so give it time; it's sure to break. Wake me up when MP3 players get reliable... till then I think I'll stay asleep and pass on this current generation. :pinch:

I hate MP3 players... you'd think that spending ?400 on the 40GB iPod would mean you'd have the least problems and it would be a smooth ride, what with it being the market leader and the highest priced. I got so fed up of its problems (like the EQ's leading to distortion of the sound, particularly when the bass setting was involved) I ended up selling it and loosing ?100 - still, I was just let down by a horrible experience (though the packaging was nic:whistle:e:).

PS - This was not meant to disrespect the iPod, but I thought by paying a premium on the player in comparison to others that I'd avoid all these problems...

well, my friend has a 30gig nomad zen xtra and the thing is bad ass. almost had it for a month and there was no dissapointments. not only that but he got an awesome deal on it. we bought it new from CC for $217 so you wont see any compliants from me. however, the zen he has is maybe 2cm thicker than an ipod.. i dont see how its that big, but there is a difference between a zen xtra and a regular one. youre right about the case though, but its not hard to live with..

I've never heard of anything happening like that.

I'm not kidding... the difference in size between the Zen and the iPod is quite considerable, and certainly changes it from being convenient to cumbersome... not just an opinion, the size difference is very apparent.

the eq problem could just be because you're playing lossy encoded files. if you turn up the volume too loud on practically any lossy encoded file it will begin to distort (especially at the extreme top or bottom of the frequency range). you must also realize that increasing an eq setting is increasing the gain which automatically adds distortion.

if you're breaking all these players, maybe you should be looking at how you treat them and not how they are made. i've owned quite a few portable devices and have never broken a single one. most of them barely have scratches, and i don't treat them THAT well.

if it's a defective part, return it and get a new one. it's not that hard.

Ok, just as a hint, you're normally supposed to carry them in your hand or pocket. Not drag them behind you on the ground...

Seriously, if they're breaking that much across different brands, it's probably a case of the PEBKAC...
