tonytwotimes
Is this a good program to skin winXP? There are many nice themes available for it, but I was wondering if it takes up a lot of system resources?
Frogboy Administrators Posted February 14, 2002 Administrators Share Posted February 14, 2002 (I'm the Product Manager of DesktopX so I'm biased but I'll try to be as factual as possible) DesktopX doesn't skin Windows, it allows you to build your own desktops. That said, uses very little in the way of resources because it compresses the images in memory (I believe it's the only program of it's kind that does this). For example, if a user wanted to have a "skinnable Email checker" they would be better off using DesktopX with an email object that checks their email because it would use less memory and resources than the two popular skinnable email checking programs. The memory it uses depends largely on how fancy the desktop you build (called a theme). It can use as little as just a few megabytes of RAM to dozens of megs if you get crazy. ;) v1.1 is due out in a couple of weeks and is much nicer than 1.0A which was released last summer. Hope this helps.

Guest deadzombie
Here's a DesktopX theme I'm currently working on... App Launcher (user name is thissux, don't ask why...) DesktopX not only has some incredible graphical capabilities, it also has a wonderful internal plug-in and messaging system, allowing different items to interact based upon some sort of user or plug in input. I have run DesktopX for over a year now, and since about 8 months ago I stopped noticing ANY drain on system resources at all - it incorporates to the desktop as if it was built into the OS. I say give it a try, this is my favorite Stardock App.
