patseguin Global Moderator Posted February 24, 2004 Global Moderator Share Posted February 24, 2004 I just bought one of those new emachines m6805 laptops. Everything is great except that I found a single dead pixel in the lower right hand corner. Is it the norm to have a dead pixel or two on a new notebook? I'd hape to exchange it only to get one with 3 dead pixels.

markwolfe Veteran Posted February 24, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 24, 2004 The definition of "broken" for LCDs is much different from what you and I (the consumer) thinks it is, when compared to what the manufacturer states it is. As part of the manufacturing process, a small percentage of transistors that drive the pixels on and off fail due to small flaws. While this number is very low, it does happen, so the manufacturer quotes a failure rate which results in a few pixels per display (larger resolutions will have a higher number of pixels). There are some design changes being worked on that reverse the on/off logic and design of the LCD to make failures revert to "off" (which will be less annoying than a green pixel lit up on a black screen - incidentally, green is statistically the color most complained about because it is more visually irritating). However, I believe that this is still in the 'concept' stages. In the mean time, the best recourse we have as consumers is to have the store 'fire it up' before you buy the unit.

reactionary007
my last laptop had one - i returned it - new one had two - i eventually returned it - new one had one and some smearing and back light issues - i returned it - new one had a cluster of dead ones, a stuck green one, and various other dead sub pixels. returned it. no lemon policy at best buy kicked in and after two years i got a brand new laptop... twice the specs... and not a single dead pixel. couldn't be happier.
