Running Linux

I want to use Linux, but I'm not used to it. Right now im on a network, i was wondering how do i see other people, and is it ok if there windows?

Yeah, Samba is the way to go. On most RPM distros, you just need to start the Samba service in the distro's services settings. You can change the workgroup and such in /etc/samba/smb.conf, but again, most RPM distros have a configuration utility to do that too. If you are using KDE, open up Konq and type smb://compname/sharename. If you are using GNOME, open up Nautilus and browse to smb://compname/sharename. Easy.

And, when you get comfy with access to the Windows shares on the other PCs, you can start looking at the mount command to make a permanent connection you can access via your filesystem with something like /mnt/pc1_share :)

Konq does not transfer files properly to SMB shares when the files are larger than 256MB (in my experience anyway).

I found it best to install Samba on Linux and then open the share on a Windows 'puter.

huh? I've never had problems with samba through konquerer...use it all the time to transfer between my linux box and my roomie's computer, always large files.
