I am purchasing the powerbook 12 inch (it's being shipped now :D ) , What are the options I have in order to use the wireless networking? I dont want to spend much money on airport sets..so..somebody please give me the options I have :) . Apple stuffs are just much more expensive than the PC's that I used to buy  ... configure Veteran Posted February 25, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 25, 2004 I'm not sure but I don't think that there is any difference between the Airport Extreme Card and any other 802.11G WiFi cards.

mipra
Why would anybody buy Airport Extreme then? I found out that there is no PCMCIA slot on the 12" version. How should I plug the PCMCIA in? or...should I just use USB?
BTallack
Airport Extreme is only for Apple Computers. It uses an Apple proprietary format. Its a small card that goes inside the computer (in the battery compartment on powebooks) which connects to a preexisting antenna. There's no antenna sticking out of the computer to ger broken. nuka_t
just buy a regular 802.11g router. apple, like with everything else, renames things to make them sound better. eg "power"book "power" pc, "airoprt eXtreme." they are all just a notebook, a processor, and a wireless standard. Tim Dorr Veteran Posted February 25, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 25, 2004 Why would you *not* want to use an AE card when it's designed to fit into your computer? Do you want a card sticking out of your computer? I wouldn't...

aristotle-dude
You are stuck with the Airport extreme card for the 12" but you can use any G router with it. I personally have a Dlink one.

Cowpie
I just poped in a AE card into my 12' pbook and it works fine, just had to disable WEP on it(netgear and AEcards have differances of opinion on WEP)

Bling3k12
It's the money :p . I just want to save some money by trying to figure out alternatives :) It's not that expensive... I'd pay a bit more for the convenience to know that everything's gonna work just right with my system.
Cowpie
Anyone have a idea how to slap a NetGear 814v2 around so that I can have 128bit WEP on it and the powerbook will actually connect? Right now with WEP enabled, it connects(with good reception), but does not allow for me to view any webpage or actually use the connection.... Ive tried everything, anyone got a new idea? Tim Dorr Veteran Posted March 4, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 4, 2004 That's the router we have. For some reason (I'm guessing the processor inside it isn't fast enough), it doesn't work with WEP enabled. Even 64-bit didn't work. We just have it disabled and use ssh tunneling for anything that needs the security.
