JadeWolf324
i really like slackware alot...but 9.1 doesnt have all the latest software that i want. so i figured that running slackware-current would be the best idea. my question is, can u guys tell how i might go about doing this? is it a hard process? please fill me in..im at school right now and havent tried it yet. also: could u guys tell me how hard it would be to install my ATI Radeon 9600PRO? just got it...so im worried about driver installations. kemical
just get swaret, and in the config file change the version to current
kongit
download and install 9.1, then you can update with swaret or slaptget. I found that radeons were very hard to get to work with the 2.4.x kernels and x. however I got mine to work perfectly with 2.6.3 and I didn't have to do anything besides editting the xf86config
JadeWolf324
can i get the 2.6 kernel with slackware 9.1? also can u guys give me some info/links about swaret
kongit
google for swaret. I don't believe you can get 2.6 with the 9.1 but it comes ready for it. all you have to do once you have 9.1 installed is download the kernel, and install it. JadeWolf324
so then...why do they have a slackware-current? is it a distro iso or is it just a repository.
MegaManXcalibur
The current is for all the current files. The reason the 2.6 kernel isn't in there is because Slackware uses the 2.4 kernel for stability reasons.
splatnix
ok - just beating a dead horse: The 2.6.3 kernel is currently in testing, however Slack9.1 and up is "2.6 ready". Just compile, plug and go. You can update a 9.1 install using swaret or slapt-get. Both systems work quite well, but most people have taken to swaret (though I think this is also because it's been around longer). I just like to promote both solutions :) If there's anything specific you're looking for package wise, I'm sure you can find it, and if not, we're always here. Current is just a way to put updates together. The could call it updates like Fedora/Debian/the BSDs/etc do with their updating mechinisms. It's not enough for another release, but it's updates that are needed, tested, and stable.
kemical
so then...why do they have a slackware-current? is it a distro iso or is it just a repository. just a repository for updated packages, not necessarily updating the whole system. as for your kernel, checkout linuxquestions.org in the Linux - Distro / Slackware section, there are several posts at the top on how to update your kernel. if i have time today i may post a slackware specific how-to on updating kernel from my experiences. www.swaret.org is the official site link to swaret and it's awesome ;)
JadeWolf324
well i ran swaret and i have to say im completely happy! i have EVERYTHING i've wanted. swaret is much nicer than slapt-get in my opinion. i now have KDE3.2 running smoothly with no problem! thanx guys! slackware 0wnz!
