Dazzla Veteran Posted February 14, 2002 Veteran Share Posted February 14, 2002 I had my .HTML and .HTM file type icons changed to the nice aqua one in an OSX set. I replaced the icons in MSHTML.dll and URL.dll to the ones I wanted and it worked for a while. After a windows update they are back to normal. I've re-replaced the icons in the two files but it makes no difference, can someone help me out here? Cheers btw, the new aqua icon is present in the taskbar and the url's, but not actual .htm and .html files... EDIT: nm I've solved it
kingzagz
That's easy! Open up an explorer windows go to Tools -> Folder Options on the menu. Click on the file types tab. Search through the list till you find HTML Document. Once you find it hit the "advanced" button. Then click on change icon. You can use that method to change the file icon for any type of file. Dazzla Veteran Posted February 14, 2002 Author Veteran Share Posted February 14, 2002 That method works for most icons but not for HTM or HTML icons, try it. I had to replace the icons in MSHTML.dll again for the 3rd time

I had to replace the icons in MSHTML.dll again for the 3rd time XP has a file-protection scheme which protects its internal .dlls from being overwritten/hacked by rouge programs. whatever change you make is going to trigger XP to replace it with the default .dll it has stored in its cache somewhere. Dazzla Veteran Posted February 14, 2002 Author Veteran Share Posted February 14, 2002 yeah, its also in system32dllcache What I couldn't understand though is why my taskbar icon and my url icon was changed but not the htm icon, anyway, its done now. Guest deadzombie
ok, this is a fun one...and a major pain in the ass. If you right click on the file (.htm / .html) for properties, you'll see Web Document tab and Icon tab; Change BOTH of those to the same icon and your .htm /.html file will keep it's new icon. Other than that, nothing Ive tried works. It's a pain, but it works.
Dazzla Veteran Posted February 14, 2002 Author Veteran Share Posted February 14, 2002 I've done it, it works fine. Deadzombie, I couldn't find what you were talking about, it worked fine by me simply replacing mshtml.dll again:

Qwakui
If the icon is being restored by something that is not Windows File Protection (that is, there is a considerable amount of time from when you replace it and when the OS restores it (considerable meaning enough time to do what I'll describe here)), assuming your volume is NTFS, replace the icons in that file, and then change the permissions so no entities have the permissions to modify it.
