akaladis Veteran Posted February 26, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 26, 2004 power of linux = the kernel :) very stable kernel try some user-friendly distros and you'll understand why Linux has a big share in the server market (and slowly growing on the average desktop user)... Some nice ones to try: 1. Knoppix Live CD: No need to install anything on your hard drive, and still see the coolness 2. Mandrake Linux 9.2: My personal preference! 3. Radhat Linux 9: My second preference (for more serious use) /Raptor

longwilli
yep other then the live cd's there is xandros and lindows which are great for beginners for ferora core or mandrake if you feel confident. thanks nw this is daft but where would i get that software. in most cases straight of the website for free burn to disk or you can order retail packages EDIT: Lycoris is quite good for beginners too and has a more user friendly interface
matt74441
Try distrowatch.com
EnderDX
I actually recommend SuSE Linux over everything. Easy to use, free updates, tons of software (5cds, 1dvd). Yast 2, it's main control utility can handle everything. You install something that requires a package, if the package exists on the cds/dvd it will get it. They also update packages quite often for security issues and the update program checks every day for an update. I tried going from SuSE to another distro for a test run. I reinstalled SuSE that same day :)
markwolfe Veteran Posted February 27, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 27, 2004 thanks nw this is daft but where would i get that software. http://linuxiso.org/ Good spot to download. Distrowatch is a good place to compare and get fairly current news. They have links to the "officical" sites, too! Pick any of the mainstream ones, and try it! It is much easier than many people think!

MrA
power of linux = the kernel :) very stable kernel You're also forgetting the power of the command line and the tools available such as grep and awk and others.
kongit
don't forget speed. linux properly configured can often go faster than windows. The only setback is that the defaults are normally not fast. you have to tweak and modify stuff.
