slapnuts_ox
its not the fact that the license it what it is......its the fact that they did it just to spite people. XFree86 is the standard in linux for an Xserver and they are one of the most closed open source projects I have ever seen. The developers are very slow to add patches from outside sources and basically reject anyone from trying to join the devel team and get read/write cvs access even to their own dir. all I gotta say is its about time things started to change and I hope x development will become similar to that of the linux kernel.....fast, stable and open. ONE YEAR and the developer says "nay, it's not my code, send it to drm, but i will definitely not include it into the radeon driver, stick to the vesa driver for this card"? at this point i really hoped the whole thing would blow up and reform to a better, more open, and less arrogant project for an open xserver. slapnuts_ox
"We're proud to announce our sponsorship of Australian student Daniel Stone, who promises to work at a breakneck pace to complete an initial release of the FreeDesktop.org XServer, scheduled for mid-March." Well after this is released hopefully issues like what bladerunner81 described will occur less often. Personally I plan on installing this new XServer as soon as it is officially released and therefore completly remove the need to use XFree86. You could say that the license change was "the straw that broke the camels back". I do however think the XFree86 team does deserve to be thanked though for all the hard work and time they have put into X. I have only had X crash on me a handful of times and they were all issues from using official Nvidia drivers. They developed a great base for developers to start with and now I feel we should all look towards the future.

Fred Derf Veteran Posted March 4, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 4, 2004 im a little confused about whats happening with this controversy... There is a very minor licensing change that requires distros to include acknowlegements in the final documentation. It's a tempest in a teapot. Most users are frustrated with the inner workings of the XFree86 team and are using the license change as an excuse. You could alternately think of the license change as the straw the broke the camel's back.

Fred Derf Veteran Posted March 4, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 4, 2004 that is what I am beginning to think to. I'm just impressed that I had a chance to use both "tempest in a teapot" and "feather that broke the camels back" in one posting. I've already reached my clich? limit for the day and it isn't even 9:30 yet.
