Please Help - IE6 constantly crashes in XP

Recommended Posts

IE 6 is crashing/hanging very frequently since upgrading to XP Home Ed. A

page locks up and I have to

ctrl-alt-del it to get to task manager. After I close the offending / not

responding page, all my other IE windows close out, too AND my taskbar

disappears. I'm left to alt-tab around to navigate or I just reboot from

task manager (since the start button is gone along with the taskbar). Very

frustrating. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Marcus

IE 6 is one of the basic components in windows. I would try to reinstall IE6, go to your control panel, add or remove programs. Now on the left side of the screen you click add or remove windows components. You will need the Win XP cd. I have XP Pro but it should be the same on Home ed.

I'm sure someone else can explain it in more detail than I can. Good luck!;)

Thanks, David.

Should I uninstall IE6 and then reinstall, or just try to install on top of it? Should I be nervous about uninstalling IE6 given prior problems with people doing that? Also, when I try to reinstall on top from Microsoft's IE6 download, it says that I already have a newer version, probably because I've added patches/updates.

Thanks again.

I would try uninstalling maybe in safe mode? Did you upgrade from 98,me, 2000 or is this a fresh install? Always do a format of the hard drive and then do a new install of a operating system, i'm sure you know this already;) . I really don't think XP will let you uninstall while in full mode, but I could be wrong. I had a few problems with ie 6, but ended up reinstalling XP anyway with no problems since.

Anyone have any other ideas?
