Hi! A few weeks ago I update chipset drivers for MB. Downloaded from gigabyte website. After that I started hearing "disconnected" sound at random times. Googling I found two apps (USBDeview & FullEventLogView) that helped me narrow down the culprit. It's my external WD HDD. Any suggestions what I could do to solve this issue?

Go to the device manager and uninstall the WD SES device driver, located under WD drive Management devices. There was someone on another form with the same issue as you describe and after contacting Western Digital they were told this was the issue.

Hello,

If you look in the Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC) at the Properties pane for the Western Digital drive and/or the USB port, is there a Power Management tab?  If so, is the option Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power? checked?  If so, does unchecking (disabling) this option make any difference?

I have disabled Power Management. Will wait and see now!

Sadly didn't work. At 13:40 heard disconnected sound again! Milliseconds before event log shows this

I know this seems to be a regular suggestion that I offer, but I have found it useful in the past: if you create a live USB key of Linux and boot into that for a while, does the external drive still have the disconnect issues?

Also, how old is the drive? Do you plug/unplug it regularly? I'm just thinking that it could be the USB cable at fault?

Drive is old. Not sure when I bought it. Been years now. I never unplug it, my pc runs all the time.

Like I said, this started when I updated chipset drivers, never had this issue before.

Of course. Apologies, I blame it on Mondays. :laugh: Yes, you did mention it started after updating the chipset drivers.

However, that does mean that my suggestion of booting a live Linux USB could be helpful. If it is a driver issue then there is a possibility that a different OS would not have the issue you are facing. If it does have the same issue I would start looking at a hardware issue.

This is an old video, but you can do the same thing with LinuxMint 22.1

Hi all,

@yocoprovided me with the log file from using Linux Mint. The device was recognised by the system, but I cannot see anything to say that it disconnected after that.

So it looks like a software issue (driver, OS) to me rather than a hardware fault.

That's what I thought, too. Software issue.
