Just checking with you guys to see if you have had this behavior and maybe a fix? I booted up my Windows 1123H2 system and was met with these issues (pictures added). I have never had this issue and turned my VPN on and off with no change. Is this some issue with the last update? I looked in the settings and all of the region/location settings are correct. I rebooted the system twice, but no change. Any ideas?

Hello,

Did you buy the license directly from Avast. or one of their authorized resellers?  If not, there could be geographic restrictions on the license and your computer does not reside in one of the regions covered by it.  I see that happen regularly with software licenses bought bought from online marketplaces that specialize in such things (G2A, Kinguin, etc.).

I'm not sure if that is the case with your license, but Avast should be able to tell you if that is the case and, if not, know how to troubleshoot things:  https://community.avast.com/

The problem here is it’s more than Avast showing the message, and the message isn’t always 100% the same, so I doubt it’s Avast interfering with a different app.

have you tried using default location? may be try using some of the other stuff here too to see if anything fixes it: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-location-service-and-privacy-3a8eee0a-5b0b-dc07-eede-2a5ca1c49088#WindowsVersion=Windows_11

Did you check your region settings by chance?

Looks like they may have gotten mucked up.

These programs worked perfectly yesterday and now they don't. I wonder if it is some bug related to a Windows update?

Does it happen in Safe Mode?

I will check on this. All of these programs worked flawlessly yesterday and now they don't. I believe that there was an update that occurred and maybe changed this?

Was it a Windows update? Can you tell us what it was if so?

This has to be most bizarre issue I’ve ever seen in Windows.

I really have no idea. I simply turned off my computer and rebooted it the next day and whammo-bammo the issue appeared. I've tried resetting the region (which was correct the first time) but no go. I will try to roll back the last update and see if this helps.  On a shameless side note, this is why I have both a Mac and several LInux-based computers. Thanks for everyone's help!

I am right there with you and for the same reasons. Its become bad enough with updates being unreliable that I usually run Windows in a VM with snapshots.

Nothing that I've done has helped. No rollbacks available. Resetting the location also has done nothing. Thankfully, this is not my main computer. I guess that I will have to either reformat it (with something other than Windows) or reinstall. Thanks again everyone!

Hello,

These are all programs from the same company, Gen Digital.  Their sub-brands are Avast, AVG, Avira, Bulldog, CCleaner (aka Piriform), LifeLock, and Norton; there are probably others that I don't know about, too.  As an example, this may be analogous to having an issue downloading updates for Microsoft Office and Microsoft Visual Studio.  Yes, they are different software packages, but they are both from Microsoft and possibly share a lot of the same update infrastructure, so a problem with the update infrastructure would apply to both programs.

@Barney T.:  Try performing several GeoIP lookups on the computer in question using different services without a VPN active.  Do any of them display the wrong location?  If so, it could be that Gen Digital is blocking the updates because of that.

Thanks everyone for the helpful comments. I will report the answer (solution) when I find it. Like most here, any computer glitches bug the cr@p out of me, so I won't let it go until it is fixed.
