Cowpie
So I make a dvd on my lovely PC, pop it into the new powerbook, and poof, disc comes up, apple DVD player opens up but.... No movie to be played. Try to press play, "This Operation Cannont Be Permited", Open->VIDEO_TS, "No usable media file found" Is it just me? Or have some others had bad experiances in the DVD+R region too?

NeoMayhem
Try playing it with mplayer, but if DVD player opens the drive can read +R, so that is good.
Southern Patriot
This may be an obvious question, but have you tried playing the same DVD on your PC or a DVD player, just to make sure that it actually burned correctly?
aristotle-dude
If you are going to insist on burning DVDs onto DVD+R, get the compatibility bit setting tool (if it's available for the PC on Windows) It will let you set a compatibility bit on DVD+R disks so that they appear as DVD-ROM. You really should be using DVD-R instead of DVD+R because the media costs the same and both are readily available but DVD-R is still the most compatible format out there on consumer dvd players. Does your DVD Burner on your PC only support burning +R? I only use DVD-R on my Sony external DVD burner even though it supports +R/+RW media when working with DVD video. Another thing to try is to burn slower than 4X sometimes drives have trouble reading disks burned at such a high speed. Try 2X or try out the compatibility tool. BTW. Are you running Jaguar or Panther?
wilfried
I've never been able to play DVD+R on my Mac either. Not just my ibook but all Mac's that I've tried. They play fine on all players and PC's that I've tried tho. I think that the latest Nero set the bit setting by default to DVD Rom...
Cowpie
I havent tried to do the nero compatablility thing a ma jig.... It does play in mplayer, which is a semi good sign, I guess apple has some good protection on it :/
Garry
I know that until recently, Apple didn't support DVD+R at all, and neither did some of the superdrives.
Elliott
I know that until recently, Apple didn't support DVD+R at all, and neither did some of the superdrives. Correct. SuperDrives just recently started having +R/+RW features, but Apple still doesn't allow you to use them. You have to hack your drive firmware or something. VGVL
From what I've seen, DVD+R has horrible compatibility. What are the advantages of using it, if any? Personally I prefer DVD-R.
NeoMayhem
Correct. SuperDrives just recently started having +R/+RW features, but Apple still doesn't allow you to use them. You have to hack your drive firmware or something. I think you just need software that will burn +R/RW, the drives support it with the default firmware, but panther/iDVD will only burn to -R/RW though. -R has always worked better for me, but I think that +RW is better then -RW because it allows you to delete single files off of the disks which is good. Cowpie
Ive used +R for about a year, and this is the first device ive found that doesnt like it :(
aristotle-dude
Ok, if it does play in mplayer but not DVD Player, then it is the app that is preventing you from using DVD+R media. If the disk mounts ok, you will just have to use VLC or Mplayer I guess. Apple does not officially support +R. As NeoMayhem said, +RW does have it's advantages for data but for video -R is the way to go. If you ever author DVDs and send them to friends and relatives and they have an older DVD player which does not support +R, you will either have to set the compatiblity bit or use DVD-R for a greater chance of compatibility. I had to laugh when some guy at who works at Future shop though that +R was more compatible with consumer DVD players than -R. After all, DVD-R was created by the group that created DVD-ROM and DVD Video in the first place.

Cowpie
Yes well, I ran outta room in the topic :( At any rate, the disc mounts and mplayer plays the .vob files, and VLC doesnt play the disc properly(just sits there)... Anyone have a other 3rd party dvd player for osx, other than VLC and mplayer, that might do the trick?
