SAN FRANCISCO -- After two weeks of same-sex couples lining up around the block to get married at City Hall, the city of San Francisco saw even bigger crowds on Saturday morning for the raucous grand opening of Apple's new downtown store.

A crowd of 1,200 or more encircled an entire city block to be among the first customers at Apple's new store, located at the edge of the city's swanky Union Square shopping district.

Man, I wish I was there to grab one of these lucky bags...
As they poured into the store, almost all the customers rushed to a counter at the rear to purchase one of about 200 "lucky bags" that were on sale.

Costing $250, the lucky grab bags were filled with about $600 worth of Apple goods, including a wireless Airport base station, a wireless keyboard and mouse, some software and a store discount card. About one in six of the bags also contained an iPod mini.

Now this is dedication (Y)

The first people in line were Ulan McKnight, a website developer from nearby Berkeley, and a teenage companion identified only as Lovel. The pair arrived Thursday evening -- 36 hours before the opening.

Friday was McKnight's 40th birthday. His wife and son brought him a cake and balloons as he sat with Lovel on a pair of camp chairs.
