theDose
and almost plunked down the cash for a 23" cinema display ? almost!:o:o (beautiful - just beautiful!). but i can't believe they are a grand more than the 20" just because the extra 3"s makes it an HD screen. That's 2,800 CAD, just two months ago, Staples was offering a Samsung 21" TFT for 1500 CAD. now i'm all trying to justify the price in my head for one or maybe two of them. i'm so tired of staring at my 3 viewsonic tubes:wacko:o:, yes i'm going blind. i'm on my machine(s) for more that 13 - 15 hours a day and want to save what's left of my eye sight! never mind the heat factor 3 monitors put out in my 5x7 cockpit of an office. at the very least i get to write if off @ years end, but whoa that's some cash. was there any real rumour to the thought that the next gen will have built in tv tuners? how much of a diff would that be to just buying a tuner card? Elliott
They're pro designing screens. I'd be surprised if the next generation had a TV tuner. I'm sure they'll up the contrast ratio, brightness, etc. on those babies, and maybe soon. It's been a while since an update.
BTallack
An update should hopefully be coming soon. I'd hold off for at least a few more months, then go for it.
theDose
well, i know that! i've just had enough of the spacehogs on my desk and the flicker of it all... if you've ever had a multiple monitor setup (with tubes), than u'll know that you have to run each monitor at a different refresh rate. and to top it off, there's no return on even high?end monitors. Stuff that cost me a 1500+ each a few years ago, are not worth more than a few hundred on a trade in... but anyhoo, that's what i was thinking (next gen), and backed off on purchase. anyone with an idea or hint when or if they do a next gen? Astral
Yeah, I would wait for a bit until next gen displays are released. Even if they don't suit what you need, the current models will drop in price. By the way, are you on PC or MAC?

Tim Dorr Veteran Posted March 5, 2004 Veteran Share Posted March 5, 2004 but anyhoo, that's what i was thinking (next gen), and backed off on purchase. anyone with an idea or hint when or if they do a next gen? Make it larger, reduce prices, that's about it. There wouldn't be any major changes wtih an update, just prices. You might see about getting a refurbished or used display to save some cost. theDose
being fairly new to market, i doubt there would be any around for sale, maybe at auction, but anyone who's been to one of those - knows that everyone ends up over pays thru the nose on computer crap! i went to one, and some guy paid just under a few hun for the cost of new on stuff that was already two years old. Carp
I just can't justify the amout of cash to put down on a 23" display from apple. I know they are a beautiful display, but for a couple hundred more, you can get a fairly nice 42-46" plasma like from Gateway or someone like that. That's my $0.02. Personally, that's what i would do. But I know bigger isn't always better, and the picture quality is probably better on the Apple. Plus it's an LCD which is better. I just like the idea of reading all these posts on Neowin looking at a 42" display :)

I just like the idea of reading all these posts on Neowin looking at a 42" display :) 852 X 480 pixels spread over 46" would be painful to use, it's a TV not a computer display, the only reason that you can drive it over DVI is for things like keynote presentations or watching a movie. the 1920x1200 23" apple display is almost 5 times higher resolution (DPI) and if you've got a mac you can drive it with ADC so you'll only have one cable on your desk. The 12" ibook offers higher resolution (both in terms of DPI and just plane number of pixels) than the gateway display so while there's a chance I'd let it hang in my living-room, it would never be useful as a primary display on my desk. Bling3k12
I'm definitely stealing your post... I have friends that think they know what they're talkin about when it comes to that... they were like "just get a big plasma and use it" when I know that the resolution on them, as a computer display, is quite bad. *Prints out* Man what is it with you... always giving amazingly well done posts... patseguin Global Moderator Posted March 7, 2004 Global Moderator Share Posted March 7, 2004 I'm not sure why everyone seems to be crying for display updates. I have a 20" Cinema Display and it is by far the best monitor I've ever had. Brightness and contrast is beautiful and it really blew away my 19" Samsung LCD. frod
i'd like to see one that matches the new g5s in physical design. that would be my only 'complaint' and possible reason to wait for purchasing one.
SFNE Freak
Well, along with updated technology comes updated prices. The 23-inch could use a price drop to stay competitve. A 23-inch Dell LCD TV costs $1,499. It may have a lower resoulution, but $500 is $500.
Liquid
Does DLP TV's have high resolution, I hear that Samsung DLP TV's with DNIe are the best tv's on the market Sure there expensive but imagine using one of them playing Desert Combat or something! the evn show
Well, along with updated technology comes updated prices. The 23-inch could use a price drop to stay competitve. A 23-inch Dell LCD TV costs $1,499. It may have a lower resoulution, but $500 is $500. and lower resolution is lower resolution. Are you serious or just joking because I can't tell. The dot pitch of the dell tv is .39. the worst monitor I've ever used was a 12" olivetti green-and-black beast circa 1980 and even it had a higher dot pictch (.32 iirc). and again we have 1280x768 spread over a 23" display. The 12" ibook provides more vertical real-estate, and the 15" powerbook has 30% more pixels total. Television != computer screen. and that dell display would be embarrassingly bad to use (not as bad as a gateway plasma tv, but still aweful). If you want something to compare to: You'll spend between $2600 and $4400 for a 24" samsung LCD (same number of pixels as the 23" cinema display, but it's lower DPI resolution) according to pricewatch. $1900 on a Scepter 23" display with the same resolution as the 20" apple unit. $2300 for a sony 23" with comparable specs to the apple 23" apple display. $2600 fo a viewsonic 23" with comparable specs to the 23" apple display. $2700 for an LG 23" with comparable specs to the 23" apple display. (again prices from pricewatch.com) Apparently apple's 23" display is one heck of a bargain at $1999, and it's available on pricewatch for $1809 including shipping. There is no lcd Monitor even close to apple's price range for the 23" display according to pricewatch. LCD-TVs are another story but they're all 1280x768 at the high end - which as we already know is lower resolution than the 15" powerbook. EDIT: Does DLP TV's have high resolution, I hear that Samsung DLP TV's with DNIe are the best tv's on the market Sure there expensive but imagine using one of them playing Desert Combat or something! The samsung TVs (to the best I can find) max out at 1280x720p As for playing games on a huge TV: I've got a friend who manages one of the major theatre chains in town. They have HDTV projectors to display slides before the movie starts. (Xbox + HDTV output cables + wireless controlers + xbox live) * 4(500"+ screens + several thousand watts of THX sound) = halo death match of DOOM!
