kjordan2001
If you decide to do a stage 3, you can install those packages on that cd without having to compile them. It's just prebuilt packages optimized for your architecture.
MrStaticVoid
My 2004.0 experience: After my recent trial of FreeBSD (Ports are awesome, hardware support isn't), I am installing Gentoo again. I started on Monday, only to find out that I downloaded the hardened stage 1 tarball! Now I read that the mirroring system was messed up. I'm so mad, I almost had GNOME finished compiling. I guess it is important to inspect what I download more carefully in the meantime, a fresh stage 1 is chugging along on my 600 MHz machine. By the way, what is up with the new installation manual? It used to be so concise. Now it is so hard to navigate and full of confusing information. I'm glad I printed out my installation manual a year ago when it was still good. Well better luck to you kyro.

Argi
2004.0 was a waste of my time. I have to download the actualy install cd, real PITA, anyway... the livecd loads slower, still doesn't include the 2.6 kernel (which is what i need to use my raid). IOW, there's nothing specially new so far, just the cd loads slower and the background has changed to something a lot uglier. Really unfortunate IMO... =\
kyro
i think the GENTOO guys are going to kill it , CHAOS972 is dead right , The liveCD doesnt has 2.6 in it right from teh box, it load very very very slow .. but it was fine until i saw the background. it is the fugliest i have seen. I hope the next version is released qucikly with everything mentioned repaired.
Revenant
Gentoo, Suse, and Redhat are the best distros, hope you have fun with it.
[ timko ]
Neither Stage 1, 2 or 3 (and this includes the LiveCD) are supposed to contain any kind of GUI. You have to install and compile Xfree86 + Gnome/Kde/other window manager yourself. Here's Gentoo's guide on how to do it... http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/desktop.xml
Argi
I realise that, i've installed Gentoo 1.4 already, but i was talking about the livecd itself. I need the 2.6 kernel to use my RAID which only mandrake seem to have done yet for some unknown reason. I've also noticed so many more bugs, it aint funny. I mean, you need to login to access the other consoles (alt + f2...), but you cant without setting the root password. So the livecds clearly needed more testing. kyro
Neither Stage 1, 2 or 3 (and this includes the LiveCD) are supposed to contain any kind of GUI mah bad i will rephrase my line There is still no GUI in LIVECD , the gentoo peeps have done it again . this is going to be pain in the A$$ for me to emerge and install KDE and finding a way it stays on my next boot. why gentoo , why :pinch: ? [ timko ]
mah badi will rephrase my line There is still no GUI in LIVECD , the gentoo peeps have done it again ...and they're not likely to start adding precompiled X or any window manager in the future. Why? This is why --> http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/philosophy.xml :)
mr_daemon
Actually, I used the old livecd (BTW, what's with the faulty ethernet detection? DHCP keeps fux0ring over) but downloaded the 2004 stage 2 tarball. Actually, the livecd doesn't really matters. As long as you have SOMETHING to boot the machine, detect your ethernet cards, and compile stuff you'll be fine. In fact, I installed from Knoppix :)
