[jon]
Hi there, I was wondering if anyone could help me. I installed RedHat 9 on an old Pentium 2 300MHz with a 2.5Gb HDD and 64Mb RAM... I'm also using Gnome as the window system. Only problem is that the system is FAR TOO SLOW. The control panel won't even open and everything just takes AGES. The system tends to hang if more than one window is open at a time. I'm not a Linux guru (yet :)) so I don't know about how to install other window systems manually... Can anyone tell me how to install a less CPU-intensive window system or recommend how I may optimize RedHat and Gnome for my somewhat less powerful system... Thanks, x0r4h
CaKeY
Blackbox or Fluxbox would work well. You should find all the instructions you need at their sites. Another 64 megs of ram would make a huge difference too.
[jon]
hmmm... was looking more for a way to turn off some of the CPU-intensive options in Gnome.... In XP for example, one can turn off the XP look, transparencies and fading, etc in order to allow the OS run on older systems... Just wondering if such options exist in Gnome and whereabouts they can be located. Thanks
Tek
KDE or GNOME would probably work just fine if all the fancy settings were turned off.
LordHatrus
Well, have you recompiled the kernel yourself, or are you using the default one? You'll see a speed increase with a compiled kernel.... (as in, compiled, with speed tweaking, and no components you don't need) I know that's not DIRECTLY related to your topic here, but It WILL give you a slightly faster reacting PC to start off with. :)
burgers
Another 64 megs of ram would make a huge difference too. I second that!! :D Ram is the key for most gui related issues with older gear. 64mb of ram running gnome is not a good idea. failing getting more ram check out the above mentioned fluxbox or blackbox or if you want something with a bit more graphically to it, try out XFCE 4, http://www.xfce.org/ --pete.
